OT:Returning after Wilma!!!

Hi All :)

Well, I am finally back. Hurricane Wilma did a number on us down here in south Florida!!!
My wife and I live on the third floor of a condo and we lost our patio frame work. Luckily we boarded up! My wife had a feeling that it would be a bad storm and I usually listen to her hunches. She was right!

That storm was a real bad one. The guys next door had their dining room ceiling fall in and you could look up into the sky from the hole  parts of the roof were torn off. The people next to him just spent six grand on new wood flooring and got water all under the new floor and will have to have it replaced  One of the first floor units looked like a truck ran into it! The front storage room was completely smashed in.

We have only one route into the place and the trees lining the road fell and blocked the road. They also took down power lines with them. A couple of other trees fell on some peoples cars and cause lots of damage. We spent the first few days cleaning up , cutting up and manually hauling the downed trees out of the road and parking lots.

Thank God no one here was hurt in all of this. We were without power until last friday (11/4/2005). We banded together as a community and shared generators, food, flashlights and other basic needs. We set up a community kitchen at one of the condo units and cooked on propane grills. One of the owners is a manager for IHOP and she is pregnant and due soon! She went to work and there was no power. She and a group of us went to the IHOP and brought back tons of food that would have been thrown out.

We cooked up breakfast and dinner for anyone in the condo community who wanted to eat with us. It was really nice to band together like that.

Work shut down for a week until power and water were restored. Of course, the real nightmare has been traffic since a lot of the street lights did not work and It was CRAZY trying to get anywhere. Very dangerous situation to go out. It is better now but we still have a lot of lights out and tons of debris (trees, power poles, roof parts, fences, chunks of buildings, etc...) out on the side of the roads to be picked up.

On top of all that, when we finally got power back my computer would not come on. Finally tracked it down to a broken power switch. I could not find a replacement switch, so I purchased a new case with power supply and spent the last two nights moving everything from one case to the other. Lots of fun!!! :(

Anyway, just wanted to say, I'm back :)

btw,

I was shopping at a local health food store before the storm and I looked up and saw a face I recognized from my bass mags. I went up to the guy and said "Excuse me sir but aren't you Chuck Rainey?" he said "Yes, I am" with a surprised look on his face. I told him how nice it was to meet him and that I liked his work. He shook my hand and thanked me for the kind words.

I started walking away and thought, hmmm, I have been looking and well can't win if you don't try! So, I went back to where he was -- now at the salad bar -- I said "Sorry to bother you Mr. Rainey, but do you give private lessons?" he told me that he did not at the moment but did work with Victor Wooten, Steve Bailey and others at the Wooten Bass Camp and was planning on doing some local clinics. He also said that at the begining of the year he usually has some free time and may entertain doing some private classes or clinics. I offered to give him my number to please call me if he found that he did have some time to give lessons. He instead gave me his personal email address and told me to send him my name and phone number so he could keep in touch with me.

Later that day after my wife and I came back from dinner and a movie, I sent a short email to Mr. Rainey thanking him for entrusting me with his email and that I would respect his privacy. I also asked him to please keep me in mind if he is willing to give private lessons.

I check my email later that night and he replied that we would indeed stay in touch and that we would try to work something out. I have sent a followup email and he always replies. I am really hoping that works out. I have been looking for a new bass instructor to get me to the next phase of my playing. This would be cool!

Later all :)

Welcome back, Ant. Nearly my entire family lives on the MS Gulf Coast, so we know about hurricanes and the aftermath - sounds like you're doing well in spite of the setbacks.

And Chuck Rainey pulled my grandmother from a burning building once.
