OT: I'm Over It

Some things in remedial education just blow me away.

I work in that environment. I am the the computer tech so don't do what the teachers do but some things still amaze me.

They call the law on kids smoking cigarrettes outside the school. The kids address the teacher with the F word.

Sometimes I think public education is just wrong for kids that are in trouble or having trouble and teachers don't last for long around here either.

It is terrible how we take care of needy children in this country. Why am I typing this on a bass forum?

I'm going back to school soon. Hopefully finish out my Ph.D. Then it is off to teach for awhile to see if I genuinely like it. What scares me most is most kids don't seem to be willing to learn and they are simply hurting themselves in the long run. I'm hoping to change some peoples opinions about math but know that it is a long row to hoe.

Then let me tell you what you won't learn for that PHD.


These kids will not respond to beating or spanking however you prefer to call it. They are so used to getting that at home that an ass kicking won't work for them.

What you have to do it stand firm and show you care about them. Very hard to do as most of the things they will try you on is something you would beat even your own kid for saying or doing.

I don't have all the answers. I just know that the important thing is to calm them down and tell them privately. Life throws us all curves. You have been thrown a couple you missed. It hurt you.

I am the guy that wants to listen to you but also understand I am the guy that is going to tell you straight.

Then tell them straight up how to get through whatever is the problem at the time. You do that successfully once and they tell the other kids that guys knows things and you get the respect.


I won't give a kid a cigarette but I will tell the law that smoking is the last thing one of these kids here need busted for.


I still need to figure out how to convince the teachers of that.


I know the laws in my State. I also know the kids that need help because of a dysfuntional family need some love too.

A cigarette is nothing to handcuff a kid over.

The final straw was that in the dress code, rock and roll t-shirts were completely prohibited.

Did they say that rock & roll is the music of the devil & stuff like that?
