More info on exactly why you don't like the d-sonic, pete? Is the d-sonic too hot, or the old style just warmer?

I have an old-style JP bridge pickup waiting at home for me if I don't like the d-sonic in the JP you're about to ship me!

I'd say that it's kind of like blondes vs redheads vs brunettes... but those ALL work for me! :D

I've got an old loaded Blue Dawn JP which is my favorite guitar to play. I'm in love with the mojo that guitar has (keep in mind that the 20th anny silo sounds the best out of everything). It's not that the D-sonic sounds bad, because it doesn't - in fact I like the split position with it on the clean channel better. I just happen to like the overall tone from my old JP more. Bottom line, I have no idea how to describe the tonal differences between the two.
