I know some of the players out here read music and I was wandering if they could help me, I'm playing a nate lienhard piece for the jazz band audition at my school and I havn't been able to figure out how it's supposed to sound over most of the week.

the piece is swing and starts of with 3 half notes, F, C and Bb, followed by a rest and then an eith tide to a quarter, on B. does anyone know the name of this piece and where I could find a soundclip or some way of findng the feel?

well you apparently know something about theory and time, paticularly note duration. what i would suggest is get yourself a metronome, and set it at a speed where you can play the piece easily and in time, make sure to time it and everything like that. then speed it up to its original tempo, in intervals of course. the band probably wont give you sound clips at school to learn a piece, so youll have to do it the hard way. thats my 2 cents.

thank you, I had to download some software a guitarist told me about, and tab it out, I got the rthems and everything correct before, the song just doesn't groove, the good thing about the software was the fact that it played the song when I was done, for anyone that is interested it is called "power tab editor" you write down the tab and then it puts it in tab and note format and can be played and printed out, I recommend.

you could also try a program called guitar pro 4. im pretty sure its similar to the one your using, and ive had great results with it. it would probably do very well for what your looking to do. maybe its just the piece that doesnt groove. who knows?

It wouldn't groove if you are not playing with a 'swing' feel. The eighth notes in 'swing' are not of equal duration. The '&' is slightly behind where it should be, say a 32nd of a beat or so, which gives the 'swing' type feel. Listen to some Glen Miller up tempo pieces and tap along to them and you'll get the idea.

strange, it grooved when I played it....

Sure, show up 8 months later and defend your piece... :D

So what brought you here? Are you a Music Man afficionado, or did you Google yourself? :D

Now there is a great idea ask the bloke who wrote the piece to talk to you about it....if only Mingus and Jaco were still alive.......

Rob,

Aww. I'm just having fun. I had never heard of Nate before, but I think it's great that he showed up here and chimed in on this thread. And not only that, but he showed a real sense of humor about it!

Nate, if you aren't a Music Man player, we'll have to convert you. :)

I think its great writers, producers, artists and the guys and girls from EB feel able to come out and talk to us people. Where else would you get it but in this forum.
