Hey Guys,

As well as gigging around the place with my Bongo HH, Stingray and soon to be Sterling (poor action shots of the beasts in the pic section of www.transic.net. I have also managed to tie in my passion for music, with my thesis topic at university.

So if your busy wasting time surfing the net, go to www.qutmusic.com and fill out my survey.

The research I am doing is looking into why people pay for music when they have the opportunity to get it for free. So hopefully it will have implications for bands and artists trying to establish themselves, build a fan base and earn some money.

Yeah i will post the results of the survey and research for anyone who is interested.

And tiffles, yep I am at QUT, got my own office there and everything. But if your friend is doing Music he is probably at the Kelivn Grove campus, and I am at Gardens Point Campus.

Thanks for being interested in the research. I know my girlfriend and mum are sick to death of me taking about it.

Our forumite Rhys starred in the media today. While browsing "breaking news" on my Blackberry this morning on the way to work his survey got top billing, and Rhys was quoted extensively in the article. Nice work!

I took the survey...

I download music for free all the time. Legally. I think you need to make a distinction on the survey regarding free legal downloads vs. p2p illegal downloading.

+1. The clear implication in the survey is that downloading music for free is illegal, but free downloads are often available legally from artists' websites and other sources. They typically say that we hope you like the songs, and if you do we hope you'll buy the CD. Downloading music for free does not necessarily equate to stealing music, though it is just that in certain circumstances.

I did the survey.. interesting topic. I have downloaded free music, if I like one or two songs of an artist and will then generally buy the album. Its nice to have the CD covers, credits etc.

Always buy the album if it is indepentantly released music. If it is major label kind of stuff i am less concerned with purchasing an album because I know that the labels are screwing over the artist and the people that are mostly suffering from me not buying an album are the labels.

In answer to a few people.

I am aware of the distinction between downloading a song from a p2p network, and an artist releasing a song for free on their website (As a musician myself I do that on my website). However, for the research that I am focusing on, I am actually not concerned about the distinction between those two methods of downloading for free, I am really focusing on the act of paying.

I am also not assuming that downloading is illegal or wrong, I am really just trying to see what everyones perceptions and general attitudes of downloading are.

Thanks for the comments, I will consider them in the continuation of the research.

For the record. I got tired of answering what people thought I should do or would do questions.

I know what I think. I don't think for anyone else.

How many times did I have to answer the same question?

:)

I hope you pass with flying colors that is some work you are going through there.
