Whats up fellers, Been thinking about a new amp to use with the SR5. Currently I'm using a really old Trace Elliot GP-11 4-10 combo. This amp sounds pretty darn good but really doesn't seem like a good combo with my SR5, the preshape filter sounds great with passive basses, but it seems to over scoop with the SR5, and without it engaged, its impossible to tame the honk out of the amp, I just cant seem to find a middle ground with my mids on this amp, that and its super heavy and my old back is taking a beating from lugging it around. I thought Id hit you guys up for some suggestions for a 210 combo rig that has a lot of lower mid warmth to it that maybe I can add another cab to later. There aren't many amp choices around these parts so I thought Id hit you up for some suggestions.

Thanks

John

used to own a Nemesis 2x10 250w combo - great sounding for a combo, but not going back after this rig:

much more portable, MUCH louder (even with the single 12") and you can add another 12 to cover pretty much any reasonable gig

Thinking about the GK 700RB/210 combo. Just sucks that I cant try one out local. The only GK dealer around here apparently only carries the backline stuff. Other than that, if its not ampeg or Peavey or SWR its not around here.

ampeg are usually the way to go, you can buy a head for probably about $400 and a cab for a little more, they're the best in sound quality as far as i'm concerned. Best i've heard anyway.

I haven't lately checked out any ampeg stuff. But I know they havent exactly been getting good reviews as of late being that most of the stuff is made in Vietnam now. Just about every site that sells the combo stuff, theres at least 2 reviews complaining that there amps were broke out of the box. That being said id love to try the BA600 combo's.

so buy from a shop, always try before you buy. I tried a combo out, the BA115 and the sound from it was brilliant, better than any other amp i've tried, and that was with a mexi jazz bass, think how an EBMM would sound. Don't sacrifice sound for anything ;)

I bought my Eden mini-rig based on recommendations and research, did not play it before buying. It has not disappointed me yet. I use a WT550 & D210xst 4-ohm cab (sucks 500watts out of the head). It's perfect for my church gig (400 seat hall).

My Ampeg 3pro after 7 years of hard use and having twice been retubed has developed some very uncaracteristic sounds... Instead of the smooth clear sound, it has become a fuzzy sounding head. So something definitly wrong there.. I'm in the process of replacing it.
I've decided to go back to my old 80;s rig. I was never disappointed in it or had any trouble with it . Yamaha PB-1 pre amp and crown power amp. Just getting it set up for New Years Eve.

May be another option for you..

For small to medium size gigs I use my Line 6 LowDown LD 300 Pro combo. It's got a 300 watts of power driving a single 15" with a horn. There are lots of great tone combinations plus built-in effects at your finger tips to use. Plus there's a DI out for PA support and has never let me down. It's also great for studio work.

This amp handles everything either of my SR5's can throw at it which is why I recommend anyone looking for a good combo amp take a good look at one.

For $800 I got a GK 1001 RB and a Avatar Neo 4X10. This rig is a beast. Plenty of headroom! Buy used! Avatar can push a max of 1000 watts at 4 Ohms.

I use a GK 1001RB II / Acme B-2 rig, simply stellar! I've heard the GK backline combos ,,,,,,stay away from them!

Ill keep this in mind! Never seen/heard an avatar cab before. Heard alot of good things about them though.

Edit: Went to the avatar website, the B212 neo looks promising. Love the custom tolex option! I want a green or an orange one! :D

Tried a MarkBass F1 head today (into their 410 CL cab). This amp kills!! I'll get one as soon as I can afford it.

Woot!! My wife opened the credit card floodgate for me today and I ordered this from MF:

Buy Gallien-Krueger 700RB / 210 Combo online at Musician's Friend

It looks super easy to transport and I can add a 4 10 or a 1 15cab to it later if need be. Im so stoked! Too bad UPS doesn't run the first two days of next week. It will probably be here the following Monday if I had to guess. Man I hate waiting on mail order stuff!:D

Got my amp today, wow I know why some of you guys like GK so much. This amp is such a great amp with the SR5! I can actually feel the bass presence of my D and G strings!! First amp Ive ever owned that sounded great right out of the box without major tweaking! For a 210 combo its pretty loud, I don't know how it will do with a standard drums set (The drummer at church uses an electronic kit). I'm afraid of cranking it too loud, for some reason since my super redhead horror story 10's and B strings make me skittish. But I know with the church PA that this thing will be great!
