Why does it seem that older stuff like Stones, Beatles, Monkees (I didn't pick the set list I'm learning) and some stuff from that era seem to be off A440? It's not like they are tuning down a half step for singing purposes or something like that. It's just somewhere inbetween.

More "current" stuff is almost always right on...

So this is one of those things that make me go hmmmm...

Is there a logical reason or is that just the way it is?

The Triassic was followed by the Jurassic. The Cretaceous was after the Jurassic.

Now we're into the Electronictunercene Era.

I am betting they tuned to each other and not a tuner of any kind. They had ears and used them. As did all that came before the electric tuner.

However the electric tuner has put more bands in tune than any other invention.

Quite often if the studio had a piano they would tune to that. Sometimes the song would be speed up (or very rarely slowed down) to improve the sound. One tune that I can think of that was speed up was Johnny be good.

I think you also have to keep in mind the medium they used..... tape. Tape speeds and such as well as transferring that stuff can also affect the tuning. In some cases slowing the tape down a bit or speeding it up a bit to get just the right tempo/tone was also used.

"Electronictunercene Era" Ha ha!

I can't imagine that a good recording studio in the 60's didn't have a good tuning fork or a pitch pipe. That's what I used when I was a young lad in school.

It's gotta be the damn tape. That pre-electronictunercene analog magnetic el-cheapo media.

Dontcha just hate playing along with a recording that's slightly off tune. Icky. Yucky. Phooey. Blah!

No need to apologise for any of those tunes. All guaranteed crowd pleasers, even the Monkees (esp. "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone")

Apologizing more for the Monkees. Sorta campy. Although I'm having an itching to do Daydream Believer. Hell, next we'll do Leaving on a Jet Plane and Sunshine on My Shoulder.

Time is money. Even back before color tv. I'm sure they did have tuning forks in the studio. If they piano was out of tune with the tuning fork, guess which one they went with. :D

I gotta 5 stringer. I play along with a recording I find the frets.

I have a band. They call a key I play within that key.

Music is moving and fun if it isn't so then well go outside and think about it walking and step in front of a bus. That will wake you up.

Music is notes.
