Sometimes life comes at you in ways you don't expect.

I'll be moving down to seattle. in just under a week. My wife and I are splitting up....

So, this brings me to a point where I need to do something, and my goal is to make myself a better player.

So yeah, I'm dealing ok, but can anyone suggest a good dvd to help me beef some new chops? I'm not into crazy slapping and popping. Or even better, anyone got an extra dvd laying around that I can use and then pass on to the next person in need? then i wouldn't have to spend money ;)

yup, i'll be moving in a few days with nothing but my tv, video games, computers, basses, bass rig and a few dishes, oh and a chair.

I'm just going to take some time for myself, play some music and try and have a good time..

Hey Joel,

Someone much smarter than me once told me this: "It's never too late to have a happy childhood."

Having been through two divorces, I can tell you that this is good advice.

After divorce number two, all I wanted to do was just be ME, responsible for my own happiness, no one else's. This worked okay for a little while.

When I least expected it, when I wasn't looking for it, when I wanted nothing to do with yet another serious relationship, I met Erika. Try as I might to deny it, she completed me in ways I'd never dreamed of.

So I don't have any DVDs or anything, but just keep that in mind, okay?

It's never too late to have a happy childhood.

Yeah, im not going try not to push people away if someone comes along who seems to just fit. I'm only 25, I've still got a lot of life ahead of me.

But yes, all dvd's aside, I appreciate the kind words and advice from people more experienced in things like this..

Hey man, I know that you'll be able to get through this change with the help of music. It really is the best medicine.
As for DVDs, I don't know of any instructional ones, but as a 25 yearold who's day job is playing bass, I can recommend a couple things.

Check out anthony vitti's line of fingerstyle funk books at:
DaaDoo Music

for the price of one DVD you can get both books, and they are hard as all hell, and will help you to develop a greater command of fingerstyle.
did I mention they are hard? think reading 16th note snare rhythms! Also, in the second book there are TABs <BLEH>, if you are into that sort of thing.

My other suggestion would be to get rid of the TV and video games. they will only serve to waste your time and stifle your musical growth. I know its a hard thing to do, god don't I know, but if your honest desire is to grow as a musician, it's gonna take a commitment and more time on your instrument.

As another member of the XBOX Generation (which is what old people, who don't have a myspace, like to call us), I'd like you to imagine if we were as good on bass, as we are at video games. Just think about THAT!

Good luck in Seattle! Don't let the rain get ya down!

I been down that road too. Good luck. You're still young, so you will bounce back. Good advice from the poster above. My divorce really spurred me to concentrate on music, so go for it, you will see the benefits.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt Joel. When I was with my first wife I owned 2 basses, 3 horses, and a high maintenance wife. Now I have a fantastic partner, 10 basses, and 1 & 51/52 kids. Life is 1000% better now.

re DVDs/books etc for woodshedding, any and all of Ed Friedland's tuition books/CDs are great, especially for non-slapping mothers like you and I.

Your new life has just begun! Enjoy!
