Very enlightening to watch him play. And inspirational.

I've been trying to learn everything using 1st position. But with shoulder problems from carrying a sousaphone for too many years, I've found it difficult and painful at times. I've thought about giving up the bass at times because of it. But after watching Sting play, was a bit inspired. Most of his work is down around the 5th fret. So I'm going to spend some time working out things lower on the neck and see if it helps. Maybe even tune it BEAD as some have asked about.

That's one of the real advantages of a 5 string bass. You can play the pitches you normally would in first position at the 5th fret. It also gives you EADG as fretted notes. They always sound different than an open string.

You could always get a Silo bass. Short scale...

Hey! I was at that concert as well last night :D

I noticed as well that Sting's son (singer for opening band Fiction Plane) plays in a very similar manner, and sounds very much like good ol' pops when he sings.

Well crap. Had I known you were going we could have go together beforehand. Natalie is a big vegetarian so would have been fun to take the two of you to In&Out ;)

Where were you sitting? We were up in the rafters, section 215 row 11. Nothing but throbbing bass drum all night. Andy's guitar was so lost in the mix we were treated to.

I may go back to a 5'er. Just didn't cotton to the feel of the neck. Or might string it to BEAD and deal with not having the upper end.

Natalie is a big vegetarian

Actually, she seems like a rather small to medium vegetarian to me. Not that taking her to In&Out isn't a good idea. I had to stop there a couple of times on my trip out west.

We were in one of the suites, one level below where you were, center stage, so to speak.

Thank goodness for the big video monitors, because the binocs I brought were utter crap.

I thought the started kind of shaky, but built up to a good head of steam by the end. I'm really glad I got to see them.
