OT: SWR amp and cab question.

So I recently purchased a SWR 750x head and I really dig the sound I get with it but to streamline my rig a bit I ordered a SWR Goliath Jr 2x10 cab from a mailorder company to save on tax. Well I got the cab today and something is just not right. It seems that the right woofer is distorting a bit when playing lower notes so I'm going to send it back. My question is, should I be warry of using a 2x10 8 ohm cab that can take 350 watts while using a head that pumps out 450 watts at 8 ohm? Is that too much of a difference or should it be fine? I seriously doubt I caused the problem because I barely turned up the volume and the rattleish distortion was still there.
Anyone else had trouble with this kind of thing?

thanks,
Andrew

Nah, you shouldn't worry about the extra 100 watts your amp is capable of. The cab can handle 350W RMS, but it can probably handle around 650W peak. Besides, you'll have to look at how much volume you're going to need at the gig. If you're ok with the amp running at 40-50% of max output, you'll have plenty of headroom left. On the other hand, if you have to cranck it up to 65-70% you'll run out of headroom if you decide to do some slapping, and your cab will most likely "fart". I'll say you made a good match with the Goliath Jr.

I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something I did to the cab with too much power. I plan on adding a Son of Bertha 1x15 to the 2x10 to fill out the sound more but this cab by itself should not be distorting like it does. Its funny, 'cause I wanted to save money by buying online and now I'll be waiting another 2 weeks for a replacement! I won't have to pay for shipping back but it's a real p.i.t.a.!

I don't think you can break a Goliath Jr with a 750x, so you shouldn't worry about it. You probably just got a FUBAR cab from the dealer. The Son Of Bertha is an excellent cab, probably the best 15" I've ever tried. You'll soon be making sweet tones with the new setup. :)

I drive my Goliath Jr 2x10 with a power amp that is capable of 660 watts @ 8 ohms, so I agree you won't have a problem with that combination. Headroom is the key.

Check the cab for packing peanuts inside the cab. I got two Goliath Jr 4 0hm cabs shipped to me a few months back and one had packing peanuts in it. I thought the speaker was busted but it was just the friggin peanuts.

It was in a factory sealed box with no peanuts so I doubt that's the case.

As much as I hate those peanuts, I'd love if that was the problem!

Andrew,

You're better off having more power at the amp than the speakers can handle (continuous). When the amp is underpowered for the load, the amp has to work harder and could clip and cause speaker damage.
