Gents, I have this old ESP made for at the ESP custom shop in NYC around 1991 or so. I love the old guitar - it's kinda like a Luke - EMG 85 & 89's. The problem is with the neck on it - it's thin, and at 7.25" radius, it make me think "What the heck was I thinking???" now.

Anyway, I measured the neck pocket and it works out like this: 11/16 deep, 2 13/16 long, and 2 3/16 wide. It has a rounded heel.

I checked warmoth's site and their FAQ lists the direct strat replacement necks as 5/8 deep, 3" long and 2/3/16 wide - will one of their necks work? I basically want to put an EBMM type neck on there - 10" radius, axis-like...

The only other problem I foresee is that the neck plate is a little weird - they put a shaved heel on it and one of the screw holes is a little towards the center, but I suppose I can just get one made with no screw template drilled - correct?

Anyway, you can check out the pics here - I appreciate the help:

Personally, I think it would work just fine.

You may want to order cusom neck though (I would :D ) with the wolfgang neck profile and birdseye maple.... that would look CHOICE! My opinion anyway. :)

Dave,

Looks to me like the Warmoth neck will work. The pocket's a tad deeper, so you may need to shim it though. If there's too much of a gap you can make a wooden shim the same size as the neck heel (want to be careful so you don't have too thick a shim with a small surface area- that'll put pressure on one area of the neck).

I've put Warmoth necks in other guitars and they're great. (But not EBMM great though ;) )

The 24 fret Silo neck - while sweet - would be too long. To put it in you'd need to lengthen the pocket considerably and you might need to move the neck pickup back to facilitate that. Big PITA.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. I actually may just go for the standard strat-style headstock so that I can keep my existing tuners. I like the idea of the birdseye neck - I probably will custom order it since I need it without screw holes.

Now, for the fret wire - is the axis 6105?

Sure, I'm always up for an edumacation... :) I imagine the most important part is to measure before you drill - also, I imagine I should get it on a level drill press?

Ok, I placed my order - Warmoth Pro neck, 3A Birdeye maple, 10" radius with the light satin finish (I did that because they wouldn't guarantee it if it was raw), graphite nut and a new set of schaller locking tuners. Should be about 6 weeks... Thanks for the help all, as always you all rock. Maybe it will show up around the same time my rosewood axis does... !!!
