Outer strings are quieter than the inner ones?

I've got a 4 string 'Ray (2004)

Now, I'm aware the pickup posts are at different heights to parallel the radius of the fretboard, but here's the thing...

My E and G strings are significantly quieter than the A and D. So much so, that I find myself hammering the outer ones to compensate

I haven't really tried adjusting the individual string height much because (i) I can't see it helping enough (ii) I'd then be getting into issues with buzzing vs too high

Not sure if it matters, but there's some rust on the pickup posts

Any thoughts?

String height just might be the issue. Check to see that each string is the same height from the last fret and check the set up specs on EB site. Then check pickup height and try raising it to see if you get a more even response. What gauge strings are you using. I found that I had to have at least a .45 on the G - I think I'm using a 45-65-85-105. I've tried lighter strings in the past, but they didn't have enough tone or balls. I don't think the rust on the pole pieces matters. Just my $.03.

Definitely agree with the above post. Not only are the pickup poles supposed to follow the contour of the neck but so are the strings, and so I make sure I check string heights at the pole pieces as well. Rust should NOT be an issue. Hope you get it sorted as the E string definitely should not be the quietest. The G may seem quieter due to the gauge of the string, but definitely not the E.

Maybe also lower the pickup quite a bit. More distance means that the impact of the difference between the strings would become smaller (as that difference will be a smaller percentage of the overall distance).

I've had it for about 2 years now. I'd say the quiet G string has always existed. The E string is a more recent issue. But I have been experimenting with a lot of different strings to find a set that lasts longer.

I'll go off and try the suggestions posted so far [Thanks, everyone!] and report back...
