Hi, my 77 stingray pickup (short pole) reads 2,350 ohms, that seems higher than standard value, sounds very tight and clear anyway, do you know if overwound pickups came stock as an option?
Your 1977 bass should have long pole pieces, not short ones.
The long pole pieces were used from 1976 to early 1978. Each of the two coils measure approx 2,400 ohms. As they're wired in parallel the final resistance is approx 1,200 ohms. The shorter ones measure approx 3,900 for each coil with a final resistance of approx 1,950 ohms
If you're getting a reading of 2,350 ohms then I suspect you're only measuring one coil and not the both in parallel.
Putting that aside, windings could vary greatly back then. With the equipment used today, windings are consistent.
Hi Gav, I´m sure to be measuring both coils as I did at the preamp input side, my 1977 is one of those curious basses, neck, plate, bridge and pots are dated 1977, body is dated 1979, preamp is a non epoxy 79 style with green/blue tantalum caps. Former owner says is 100% original, so I suspect the bass came stock from factory.
