Beej:

a while ago in this thread you pointed me in the direction of the Bill Lawrence q-filter to get close to a single coil sound out of my EVH's neck humbucker.

Finally got the filter, and since I'm almost completely ignorant when it comes to wiring (though I can do the soldering) I was wondering if you could tell me how to hook this thing up.

All I want to do is set it up to be active on the neck pickup when the push/pull pot I have is pulled up. That's it.

If you could provide a few pointers, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Hey there! Sure thing. I have em wired up a few different ways, but here's what I'm using right now-

pushpullfilter.jpg

With the pot pushed in, you'll still retain your normal tone control. When you pull the pot, this will turn your tone control into a Q control. When the pot is rolled off (e.g. no tone rolled off) you won't notice a difference when you pull the pot. As you dial it up you'll notice the effect.

All you need is a push/pull pot, the Q-Filter and a cap/resistor. If you have any questions at all just let me know.

Good luck!

Oh- one other note: I'm using 500k pots rather than a 250 as specified in the diagram. Not a problem.

Many thanks beej, but one question:

My EVH of course has no tone knob. I want the q-filter to be at full effect with the push pull pot up, so how might that be done? Can it be?

Ah, sorry, misunderstood. Well you have two choices:

1) Use a push/pull pot for the Q-Filter, or

2) Use a dual concentric pot for both volume and Q-tone. I used this approach on my N4 - it only had one pot and I wanted to be able to dial in the Q-filter and didn't need a regular tone control.

For approach #1, you want to remove the tone pot and re-work it a bit, like this (excuse the crappy MS Paint diagram):

Use the cap/resistor supplied with the Q-Filter. You may not like it dialed down all the way, though. Try it, then try adding a 10k resistor between it and the volume control and see if you like the improvement. A good idea might be to wire in a small trim pot that you leave in the cavity- this would allow you do dial in exactly the sound you like from the push/pull switch.
