Well, you know, it happens. I look at it this way. I dicked around in getting you the strings, and, as it turns out, they never would have made it to you in time anyway.

So who you gonna blame, really? Not Doug, not you, not me, so screw it, let's party on. If you'd set it up with the Slinkys, I'd just have to readjust it once I get the Thomastiks on there, right?

And while I am not Juan Guitarrez, Groundskeeper of Death, I got this whole bass setup thing pretty much figured out. Don't let it bother you, okay?

Anyway, one of these days, you're going to end up here at Camp Bovine, and I'll take advantage of you in a big way. Ahem.

What we really need is you and me and Scott and a big bottle of vodka. I hear rumours that he can be convinced to sample vodka.

Oh, I will enjoy it. I've got a gig next Saturday that I'm hoping it arrives in time for, too. I promise I'll get sound samples up as soon as possible.

I've really enjoyed having the SC/H/P fretted White Bongo for the last month, or so. I'm going to be sad to see it go.

If you really want a fretless Bongo, I think you are perfectly safe to order one. Our two circumstances were different--they just happened to hit at the same time, so I'm sure an ordered fretless Bongo would be built as a fretless Bongo.

Fine. I know when I'm not wanted.

You can always try again when you eventually order a single Humbucker Bongo. :D

Jack,

After you hear the single H you would probably finish off the bottle by yourself trying to kill the pain.

Secret Agent Dargin has returned!

(Good to see you.)

Now about this alleged single H Bongo. I know the story was hard to follow, but here's what happened:

I accidentally sold a bass four days ago. Someone emailed me outta the blue, asking if I knew where he could find a decent Stingray 5, used, rosewood board, etc, and of course I've been considering selling mine in order to at least partly finance a single H Bongo. I blame you, Dargin - you know this.

So in any case, it seemed like kismet, destiny, fate, or perhaps I was drunk, but for whatever reason, I said, "Yeah, okay, I have one" and the deal was struck. With all the Bongo Frenzy around here, the poor thing - a great bass, by the way - was not getting any love.

The very next day, the owner of the finest Stingray 5 I've ever owned (Heinz the Wonder Bass), seen here -

- sends me an email. Now Heinz has traveled far and wide in the year since I rather impetuously traded him away; two owners, sold on eBay like a whore, hanging in a Guitar Center, and then purchased by a friend of mine in California.

Mind you, Heinz was bought in New York in late 99, lived with me in Texas for four years, trade away and sent to Virginia...I mean, you can see, it's Homer-esque.

No, not Homer Simpson.

Anyhoo, he was thinking of selling some things in order to buy other things, which is what we Gear Whores do, and wanted to know if I wanted Heinz back.

So again, kismet? Destiny? Fate? Drunk?

Perhaps.

But so went my funds for the single H Bongo, and I don't think I can be faulted, or maybe I can, but the deal is done now and Heinz is on his way home.

Expendable pennies all gone now. But one of these days, I'll have some kind of nervous fit and sell off my Custom Shop Jazz or something, probably, and then I can blame you for THAT, too!

Welcome back. Hope all is well, my friend.

(BTW, check the front page at http://www.bovinehost.com - someone said that in that photo he looks a lot like Sean Connery.)

Yes, there was a slight pucker, I admit. :D

But, c'mon now--don't go givin' Jon a big head. It's bad enough he's a guitar player...

Well, a certain Stingray, one with considerable historical significance around Camp Bovine, is winging its way home even as we type.

I've tried to tell myself, during this last Bongo Fury year, that I should always have a Stingray, and mostly I have had one. Sometimes two. I'll keep my old war-horse Heinz because he reinvigorated my love of EBMM basses, actually, and convinced me that I could really play a fiver.

Also, all my other bassist friends have such a good time making fun of the color. I can't deny them these small pleasures, can I?

But one of these days, I'll have enough extra moolah lying about to rustle up one of those single PU Bongos.

Now you, Secret Agent SDB, you have yourself a good weekend. Scare up some vodka and have a toast to the Big Guy. I certainly hoisted one in his honor last weekend.

And think of me, forlorn and downcast here in Tex-Ass without a single PU Bongo, eh?

Cheers, Scott!
