On my Parker Fly I have used D'Addario XL120's ( 9-42). It's what is recommended for the guitar. By nature the fly has too much brightness on the lighter guage strings and a deeper almost muffled sound on the heavey guage strings. The brightness driven mostly by stainless steel frets and the deeper sound from the thinner weaker magnets of the fly pickups.

I thought about a thicker set than 9's like a 9.5 set or 10's but am afraid that may make the deeper sound on the heavier guage strings more dominant.

Anyone have an idea of which Ernie Ball string to try for an improvemnet in tone? Or which set may work better for my type of guitar? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Dennis

Maceman,
I own two Parkers. A Classic and a Deluxe. Keep this in mind though- I have changed pickups on both of them to the 2nd generation Dimarzio Parker pups in the deluxe and a Steve's Special in the classic. So there is definitely a difference in tone from when I first got the Parker's.
I use two different brands of strings only. DR High Beams 9-46 and EBMM Regular Slinkies 10-46. I know that the Parkers come with D'Addario but they are too inconsistent from set to set in my experiences. Keep in mind also that if you have an older Parker then you must have the right spring in the guitar to compensate for the string gauge differences. I would seriously give the slinkies a try. I am a music store owner as well as a guitar player and I sell slinkies 2-1 over any other brand. And I stock just about everything you can think of. I believe there are only like two or three companies supplying wire to ALL of the string manufacturer's nowadays anyways. There are definite differences in manufacturing techniques I believe though I may be incorrect.

Just my two cents.

Cheers,
Kev

Thanks

Thanks for the advice Kev. I made all the changes last week including the spring chnage. It was really easy for all of the setup. Spring, string height, intonation. I used the 10-46 stainless steel. I thought trying the brighter string would be a nice chnage. It definitely has had a tone change. For the better as well. Could just be the 10 set or might be the stainless. Either way it was worth the change.

I agree about the D-Adarrio strings. I always had good luck with GHS boomers. Looks like I'm going to be a Ernie Ball guy from now on.

Thanks

parkers are all pointy, and we all know the only pointy guitar with a good sound is the albert lee model!

just kidding dennis, although parkers are too pointy and pricey and silly looking for my tastes!

Gimmie 2 puke green bass guitars with an alcoholic theme and i'm happy.

...all about the simple things. :)
