A question about Stingray active circuits that was posted on talkbass lead me to try playing my bass without the battery for the first time last night (it had never occurred to me to try it before).

Well, it sounds like a quiet Stingray. And the eq doesn't work. Other than that it's quite a usable sound. This is a SR4 3 band.

Others contributing to that thread claim their MM basses don't work without the battery. One has a Sterling, the other has a Stingray, although he doesn't specify whether it's an SR4 or SR5...

Are there some MM basses that don't work passively?

The thread's here, by the way...

I took the battery out. And it still worked. And that's where my understanding ends. :)

ok, I'm a little confused, but from the TB thread, it looks like the eq was wired as an addition and could be taken out. I need to see some schematics.

I had to play like that before, if you leave the battery in it distorts (if the battery has run out of course), but if you take it out, there is a slightly usable sound there.
