i have been playing my two band stingray without a battery ...and it plays real good...im just wondering if the battery is just for hum cancellation?

the bass is circa 96.

yes they make look the same but the electronics is seemingly in a constant state of flux.

The 2 band preamp does actually allow the signal to pass through when there's no battery in there. IMO, quite a cool feature that would be nice to have on the 3 band preamp as well.

I played a 3 band HH Stingray without a battery and it sounded great - full output and tone just like the EQ set flat. Only the volume knob works, though!

Oli, have you ever tried this with the 30th you bought from me? You might find that it functions pretty much exactly as bdgotoh describes in post #9 above, with th exception of the output level being more so around 1/2 to 2/3-ish. Just a hunch. ;)

Edit: It hadn't ocurred to me to try this with my present basses. Results: works the same as above with my Ray, no signal from the Bongo. Interesting.

You're right! It works! I don't know why I had the impression it did not, but I just checked with three couple of 3EQ 'Rays (2006 HS, 2007 H, 2008 HH) and all of them worked. Very very cool!

BTW, output on all of them was much lower than with battery.

Yeah, kinda funny how I first discovered that with the 30th. I had just received it from Wild West, and just assumed it came with a battery installed. I played it for I don't know how long until I began wondering why I needed more master than usual. I guess for the first few minutes, I thought it was just characteristic of the 30th - I'd never heard or played one before. Then I checked for the battery and laughed. Imagine my pleasure after putting one in, at hearing the 30th for the first time, as it's meant to be heard.

the reason i stopped using the battery was because the old one started to leak and i didnt want that to happen again...ill have to clean it out at some stage.

but this passive stingray is just great ..maybe a lower output but its ok with my ebs.

Hmmm...it seem you assume batteries comonly leak, which is really the opposite, batteries hardly leak, it's a freak thing.
I've never had a 9v leak in an instrument.

yeah..i thought that as well until it happend..its not a liquid but more of a corrosive white mold that takes over the inside.

trouble is that the battery in the back of the bass would probably stay there for a long time unless you have a reason to change it.
