Any Axis owners here also with a Peavey EVH Wolfgang? Was wondering what any differences are or if it's basically the same guitar.

Was thinking about perhaps bidding on ebay for a Peavey.

Hey MP ~ I owned a Wolfgang for a long time while I owned my first two Axi... I think the guitars are similar in many ways - they balance the same sitting or on the strap, and the necks feel very similar - but there are differences. The Peavey's 15" radius fretboard gives the Wolfie the illusion of a slightly wider neck, and the arched top was a feature I didn't like (something uncomfortable in how my hand hung down over the strings). The Wolf humbuckers were harsher, too. But the D-Tuna is an inspired add-on for the trem, and I really liked the "locking" arm that you can set anywhere you like and have it STAY there :D

I sold my Wolfgang to get another Axis, but I've recently been thinking that I might like to pick up a USA Wofie Special for a spare Floyd-equipped guitar - it's got the flat top, so I think my right hand would be okay with it, and they're a lot cheaper than another Axis (less than half-price around here)...

I've read on the Wolfgang the pickup switch is wired "backwards", i.e., down for neck up for bridge - seems sorta gay.....I might pick one up on ebay, if anyone else can chime in, would love to hear about the Peavey.

Ya that's true - takes all of five minutes to get used to it though - the thing I really don't like about the Wolf switch is the location - I prefer my switches low and back...

I own an EBMM/EVH, a Wolfgang Standard Hard Tail and a Wolf Special. They all show signs of being related and signs of being very different. In addition to what Jimi D has posted, I'll add that the Music Man is better suited to high gain applications than the Wolfgang. It really hits a tone that is well defined without a lot of fuzz. Warm and harmonic - that's the ticket! Also, the EBMM would be a better Jazz guitar IMO. I do know that most Jazz players would not consider this one of their first choices though.

The Wolfgang tends to be better geared to a larger variety of styles and music. It doesn't hit that one "Oh Yeah Baby!" tone that the EBMM has, but at the same time, if I were in a band that routinely played many styles of music and I needed versatility from my guitar, the Wolfgang would be a better bet (of course I'm comparing it to the Axis/EVH and not the Supersport or Sport models).

Wolfgang fretboards are geared toward larger hands better than the EBMM but there is a nice ergonomics that I like about the EBMM. Both have a nice compact, broken in feel.

Wolfgang pickups have more scooped mids, are higher output and "harsher" at full volume but running them at about "7" on the volume knob solves that easily. And that harshness is noticed only on the clean channel. They sing on the lead channel. The EBMM DiMarzios have a creamier midriange quality to them that seems somewhat unique to me.

If you like this style of guitar, you owe it to yourself to check out both of them. Both are excellent guitars and both have their strengths and weaknesses but only you can decide which is the best for you. You might also check out the forums at peavey.com. They'll give you their angle. Honestly, anybody who tells you one is "awesome" and the other one "sucks" has an axe to grind and isn't very objective IMO.

good luck.

the main differences are the radius of the fingerboards(15" wolf vs 10" axis) and to me the bridge and pups.
the bridge on the axis is a gotoh floyd and the peavey is ???
the pickups(dimarzio custom EVH winds) are just superior to the peavey wound ones.
the dimarzio's are a lot more versitle in tone and to me just have a cleaner, crisper tone overall.
Now that being said i want to add i do indeed love the wolfgang guitar,i just like to put in the dimarzio's in them for the best possible tone from the wolfie!;)
