Pedals vs multi effects

I'm going to do My live rig over and I was thinking of going multi effects , I was thinking line6 hd500 what dnyou guys use or suggest?

I guess it really depends on your needs. I'm using an AxeFx Ultra because my band keeps picking tunes that require all sorts of effects. Personally, I'd prefer to just bring a wah and delay but our tunes require harmonizers, trems, flangers, all sorts of delays, wah, etc... My singer uses a Pod HD500 but from what he's playing through, it's hard to judge the quality of the unit.

If you use a lot of effects, it's hard to beat the convenience of a multi-effect unit. If your tunes require very specific sounds, then you might want specific boxes as the multi-effects units sometimes have their limitations.

I think the hd 500 looks great, Im looking at it too , I've heard a lot of good bang for the buck, i use high gain and play at home primarily , sometime i do low gain blues stuff or slightly overdriven break up classic sound, the hd has a lot of good models and tons of effects, I would just run it through my class5 like I've been doing with my 2.0. I keep thinking of getting a good high gain amp like a 5150, but then think of the practical purpose of having a 60 watt 2 12 monster for playing at home, when i can get the hd500 and have great high gain models and tons of effects. Sounds like a win, go for it, I am. And for live there are so many possibilities. Modeling has come a long way from what it once was, check out the demos Andertons does of the hd 500 and line6 dt25, they sound awesome!

AcWild is right on! He's also got $ coming out the wazoo. So, be careful on advice.(kidding, Andrew). I have become more accustom to the raw tube sound with a couple of pedals. You can't make every song sound like the album. Or, maybe you can; if you want to work your a$$ off. Find a great tone, and let it flow from there.

i've gone so many directions between pedals and multi units...

this is my current rig... i love it and won't go back to multi units again...

just so much flexibility for me and easy tweak ability on the fly...

I am currently using a multi-effect (Zoom G5 : impressive unit for a nice price) and several pedals (Ravish Sitar, Freeze, Stereo Memory Deluxe with Hazarai, EB Volume pedal).

Multi effects are fine - don't suck your tone like some "strings of separate pedals".

having said that, I am currently using an EP booster/Mooer Green mile overdrive/Mooer Fuzz/TC Electronics Flashback delay

The thing for me is I have tried plenty of multi units (not the HD500 however) and I have never ever been happy with the sound. Probably me, but they seem to take a good deal of time to dial in and I don't have the time to set up patches and programs. Plus, playing live, it just seems to me to be easier to bend down and tweak a pedal.

I'm with Peter ... having been back and forth over the years, I prefer individual pedals. I'd prefer to get boxes that do one thing well, and change them when need be, without having to change everything.

Lol, I have never heard of these but now I must have them all!!

As far as tone suck goes, it's hard to predict. I can have a lot of individual effects without any tone suck or I can have one individual effect that will. You just have to try them in your setup to know for sure. It's not about true bypass or buffers as I got strange reactions from both with certain pedals. Multi-effects are culpable as well. For instance my AxeFx Ultra plays nicely with my 5150 but noticeably dulls the sound with my Mark V.

@Eric O'Reilly - The 5150 can be dialed down to one watt and it sounds great at any volume, clean and dirty. It's much more dynamic and articulate than my singer's Pod. I'd use it for the effects but if I had to choose between an amp and modeled tones, the amp is the easy decision. Jmho.

It doesn't look like you can get them now, they all seem to be discontinued which is a shame.

Ac you are right, I would love to get the 5150, but im talking about a used peavey block letter, with no scaling, i could not afford the EVH 5150 III combo, but for my applications the hd500 sounds great, the demos are amazing!!

Ok, gotcha. I've heard a lot of great recordings with Pods. Unfortunately, my singer isn't adept at getting those tones from his. He should be getting an amp this weekend though. In other words, it's not the gear as much as the operator.

That is SOOOoooo right, ive gotten good useable tone from the 2.0 which is over 10 years old! The hd500 in the right hands is a great tool!

Even though I`m a newbie on all things regarding sound / effects, I´ve always found multieffects convenient on the portability, but lacking some "Juice"...

I got a Line 6 amp yesterday, and gave it a try...1 min after playing, I switched back to the Boogie. The amp itself delivers so much more.

But if you´re travelling / playing a lot of places, I can totally understand having a multiFX unit is a better deal, plus I´ve never tried the Axe FX or some other higher end processors which receive a lot of credit...

For me, it´s still the guitar plugged straight in the amp. That´s how the magic is done!
