I think you'd get a better feel from the poll if you worded it one of two ways - either: "How do you like the Petrucci's tone?" scale 1(not at all) to 4(it's the best) or "How well do you think the Petrucci's pups are voiced?" Scale 1-5, with 1 as too weak, 5 as too hot, and 3 just right... but that's how you think if you've been married to someone with a Doctorate in Psychometrics :p

Anyway, I owned an Ibanez Petrucci and a Jem 7VWH, and I much prefered the tone of the Petrucci - the Evo's were way too strident and harsh for my tastes. I can see how they work well pushing through boat-loads of gain and processing, but I didn't like the tone, and I play through a rack. Now, I find the Axis pickups nearly as hot as Evos, but I much prefer their tone...

As for the EB/MM Petrucci, I'm still deciding if I can live with the neck, but I might actually have to own one to find out :D

Currently, I have two Petrucci's and this is what I did. I kept one with the original pickups. I keep it tuned down 1/2 step and tend to like it right there. I find that I like the neck pickup more so than the bridge. However, I still like the way they sound. My other one I had the pickups replaced with Seymour Duncan SH-58 on the neck and the Dimebucker on the bridge. Of course this one is in dropped D and it is monsterous! I played the dimebucker on my friends Tom Anderson and loved it and so I had it put on one of my Petruccis. I tend to favor the one with the Dimebucker, yet always go to my other one for the different tuning. I like the fact I have two guitars with different tones and tunings.

I like the sound of my 2 JP models...one's a 6, one's a 7.
I find the 7 (even if used like a six), sounds better, is more
dynamic & the clarity is amazing. Thicker neck wood? Or
slightly different pups than the 6? Who knows...it kicks
butt thru my CAE 3+ SE preamp, not too much gain...
slightly less than the 6. Great tone.

Just my 2 cents. Carry on.

You know, I found exactly the same thing when I was in the Ibanez camp; my Universes sounded a lot more... well, a lot MORE! than my Jems. In fact, it was partly the search for a more "Universe-like" tone in a six string that eventually lead me to the Axis...
