Can anyone tell me why some Petrucci guitar's have a solid magnet in the crunch lab pickup and some guitars don't? Did DiMarzio change the design of their pickup? Thanks.

Over the years, the Petrucci model has been offered with three different pickup configurations. The original set, the D-Sonic model (which looks like the Crunch Lab) bridge update, and now the Signature set of pickups.

How do the sounds compare? So the earlier JP's have a bridge pickup with the standard 12 poles? What is the name of the original bridge pickup? Thanks.

The original pickups were just called the custom Petrucci set or something like that. They were based on the Dimarzio Air Norton and Steve's Special.

I agree. That's one thing I love about John is he is always evolving. A lot of other guys play the same guitar, same pickups, same amp, etc. for years just because that is their sound. John is always trying to evolve and improve his sound.
