ok... so i just got my Petrucci in Mystic Dream... it plays and sounds great, but i'm just not used to the 24 frets. every other guitar i own has 22 frets... except my jem, but somehow the petrucci feels longer than my jem.

that being said, would the morse be a better model for me? it has 22 frets and is a stoptail(which i love). i'm not much of a trem guy.

can the morse do high gain well? i don't play metal, but i do use a lot of gain.

from what i am reading, the morse is a bit more versatile than the petrucci.

plus, the purple on the morse is pretty awesome...

what do you think?

I've never owned a Morse, though I have played them through some hi-gain amps and it just screams!
If have more drive for a stoptail and 22 frets, my vote is the Morse. :) (Being a devout JP user)

I own a JPX and a Y2D. Both are amazing but if I had to choose just one I'd stick with my petrucci. Its easier to play and I personally like the longer neck and 24 frets. I'm happy I own both though as it would be hard having only one or the other. My next guitar will be the jpxi, stallion or Luke III. I'll have all someday it's just a matter of which first :)

Really that is something you would need to decide. I am fortunate enough to have a standard JP6, JPX and a SM-Y2D. If I had to choose one it would be the Y2D because it works better for what I do. But they are all fantastic instruments

The Morse is an amazing instrument, specially for hard rock and clean tones. It can do everything well.

But I´m going after a Petrucci now. It is a beast, and it will suit better my need for playing thrash :p

I think you should just take sometime with the JP and sit and play it hard for a few days before making a move. You will be able to pull off whatever you do on a More that you can on a JP. We all have little quirks about guitars, but I really do not thing 24 frets should be an issue and you may just be over thinking and dwelling on it. I have a couple of guitars with only 21 frets which I find to be a pain in the ass but just work around it.

I have a Morse, and same as you, I don't play 'Metal', but I do some hi-gain stuff.....the morse humbuckers do high amps really well (I have a Marshall TSL100 as one my amps). Very versatile indeed - surfing around the forum here you'll find that seems to be the most consistant accolade for this instrument. I love the stop tail as well......go try one out!

Who ever said that Morse does not use high gain? He used peavey 5150s for a long time which are beasts. And now he uses ENGLs which are even more badass. The pickups are designed to handle high gain yet retain all the clarity. The thing is that he does not set up his gain like a great majority of heavy gain users. Its all about the midrange.

I'd give it some more time. I used to play 22 frets guitars exclusively for years...the JP models were my first 24 fret models, and at first, I was thrown too.

Now, I can play both without a single problems, and I really appreciate the 24 frets on the JPs.

If you swap so soon, there is really no saying you will like the Morse better...you might end up missing the Petrucci.

The Morse bridge pickup is one of Dimarzio's highest output pickups. It is tamed a little with the 250k pot, but it will do high gain no problem. I love my Morse, but I do prefer the JP's.

morse, Y2D, JP all of this guitars are great. all of this guitars can do high-gain stuff very well.
i prefer 22 frets at the moment, the neck PU sounds better on 22 fret guitars as on 24 fretters.
the JP necks a very fast, with its slim neck profile and the tremolo works great.
but as it comes to tone, i prefer my Y2Ds over the JPs (incl. the BFR).
my JPs don´t get that much playing time anymore. i like those guitars, but for most stuff i play, i prefer the Y2D - even for metal style songs.
