What do you guys think about using a Petrucci w/Piezo for Jazz and Lighter Rock stuff?

I usually bring 2 guitars to gigs, but I only end up playing one (recently my Silo). We have some heavier stuff we play, but we also do some lighter stuff. Has anyone had success with the Petrucci model for lighter stuff. I really want that guitar to work for everything.

I can get some great cleans out of the middle position (split). Combined with a warm a clean and bright clean with a bit of overdrive I get some outrageously wonderful cleans for lighter stuff.

Aside from that I usually go to the neck position and taper off the vol. knob. Works well for me. Hope that helps, despite how confusing everything is that I just wrote.

But for what its worth, for that kind of versatility, you're gonna be better off with the 25th.

Aside from the cluck and quack which are championed by 3 single coil pickups, a Pet with Piezo should cover most other bases and I'm sure will suit your requirements.
I like rolling the volume off on buckers to clean it up - but as the guys will know around here I am also a big fan of the Piezo and play the piezo through a dedicated acoustic amp.

The JP with Piezo is a very versatile instrument.

Yup, what the previous posts have said. I take jazz lessons and occasionally sit in at my teacher's gigs. I show up with my Pet. It's very versatile and a breeze and pleasure to play.

I also got a hardtail Axis Super Sport with piezo. It sports (sorry about the pun) some cool tones that are different from the Pet. in particular, I cop a cool Tele tone splitting the 2 humbuckers using the outside coil of each. Between these 2 guitars, I have all my bases covered.

And last, the piezo on my MM guitars amplifies sounds more natural that my acoustic guitars amplified through the same amp.

Cheers,
Marc

You can get some really good lighter rock tones from the JP. The jazz stuff may be a little harder, but the center position is really nice for cleans and mild overdrive.

i think the neck bucker is good for pretty much anything. and the tone pot covers alot of range. if you go easy on the gain, it's the guitar you want.

Definitely. This makes or breaks the piezo IMO. Get an A/B box and get the piezo its own dedicated acoustic amp or PA. It's worth it. Unbelievable really.

+1.

The neck pickup and the middle position on the toggle will get you a lot of great clean tones ...

Yup. Used to be a user vid here where the guy knocked out some killer country licks from the pet.

If memory serves correct that was "RangerBabies" friend

ive got older petrucci model and im happy with the pups.
The tones are amazing theyre so balanced comparing to other instruments and that makes it so versatile.
Middle position plus piezo/magnetic works fine for me.

In terms of stock JP's, I'd go the older version with a Steve's Special Bridge PUP if you can find one.

+1 if you're looking to do lighter rock and jazz. The D-Sonic is an awesome pup, but it's definitely made for heavy music. Doesn't clean up the easiest...

The JP is very versatile! Use your guitar volume knob to reduce the output if needed. I had a push/pull knob installed for split coil tones and it sounds amazing. It's not exactly a single coil tone (like a strat), but it's pretty dang close and sounds reaaaaaaaaally good. It gives me the Ty Tabor (King's X) tones I was after among other cool tones! The neck split is so clean and smooth with just a hint of twang. Beautiful!

I've been thinking of getting this push/pull pot with my JP6 as well. The rosewood neck adds a nice warm full tone, and I feel I can get so many more tones out of it.

Dunno if I can find someone who can do this mod for me in SoCal.

you know i really don't what to make of the D-Sonic? i've heard more abrasive pups but i agree it lacks some jangle to be a light sounding pup. it still wouldn't say you'd have an imperative need to swap it out in order to play lighter muzak. i mean, if the dude in nickelback is playing with emgs...
