Hey, I am wondering how a pick would proform on a 4HH bongo? I'm a punk basist with really sloppy technique when I'm playing with the guys. Well not sloppy, but I play kinda like mark hoppus, strum and mute... with some up down stuff for speed.

But like alot ofplayers I like to get alittle more musical at home so i want a bongo.

So, will a HH get in the way of my pick? Will my pic cause extra noisewhile dragging on the pickup...

Also, how much more punch/cut/deepness/aggressiveness WHATEVER does a HH have over an HS? All I've heard is a HH is a little harder to tame.... I've playedan HS, and it is VERY powerful, so I'm curious here.

Even if I play mostly with fingers, I use a pick on a Bongo 4 HH to play punk stuff or fast pop lines. None of the PU ever get in my way (I play near the bridge to get a good pick sound).

For punk stuff I'd rather use the bridge PU alone, to get a clear sound. With both H mixed, the sound is louder, so maybe not so "punky" (I use this mixed H position with a pick to get hardcore sound).

I never tried an HS Bongo, so I dont really know what's the sound difference between mixed H/SC and H/H.

I think you'll find that as you get used to an instrument you make imperceptable changes to your technique....I had to adjust my fingers back coming from a Fe*der Jazz 5 to a MM SR5. I used to rest on the neck PU now I'm on the front of the MM PU. It feels weird at first but in about an hour I was like, no problem at all. If you hit the pickups at first I think you'd adjust, but I doubt you'd hit them. Even so, during the music you describe, plus your own description of your style, would you even notice or care? Go for the Bongo....I hear they RIP.

im a pick player too and play a lot of punk rock and have given this a bunch of thought.

my conclusions is as stated above ... you'll get used to it. the only issue here is what your other basses are and where do you pick?

your picking hand probably "found" its spot b/c of some combination of comfort and "thats where it sounds best". you wouldnt wanna get a Bongo and adjust where your picking hand goes then end up playing in the "not so sweet spot" when you grab your Fe%$$r Pbass.

instead of adjusting where you pick you could also adjust how "deep" you pick (how far below the strings does you pick actually get - will you hit the pup?). so thats an option too. or you could adjust the depth of your picking a tiny bit and lower the pup a tiny bit.

either way i think you can pull it off. if i could get over the looks id totally have a Bongo by now BUT if i were you i would consider the HS. Like stated above the HH isn't too punk sounding so you'd prolly end up choking the neck pup when playing punk ... but if the neck pup was a tad milder (like the S) i think you could use it to round out your punk rock sound and still have a bunch of flexiblity to get musical at home.

so arin says: get an HS. if you think im dumb: get an HH cuz youll definately get used to it

Heh, I was only considering the HH because I thought it would be more suited to punk... more aggressive more punch. But you could be right, the hsc would only mellow it a little rather than a lot for the bottom. I really wish i could play them... I got to meddle with a HSC out of town for about an hour.... but I didnt have a pick so I played funk and stuff. I honstly dont need more bottom than that I was looking for aggressiveness.

well ... the Stingray and Sterling do punk rock tone beautifully. so its a good guess that the single H Bongo will do punk rock well too (sure it sounds different, but close enough) ... so i think what you gotta consider is will the HH or HS config be more "usefull" for ya. by "usefull" i mean: which config will add to both your punk rock and "musical" needs.

honestly i think this is one of those "do i want the hot blonde or the hot redhead?" kinda things ... you probably cant go wrong either way. they may differ, but both will do ya just fine ;)
