The TI's are probably the lowest tension flats on the market. I haven't used every flat brand, but in my experience I'd rate tension from low to high as -

Thomastik Infeld
Dean Markley
D'Addario Chromes
Rotosound

Of the above brands, for general rock I prefer the Chromes. I tried the heavy gauge Rotosound Steve Harris set, but they were far too stiff to get a decent sound.

What are they like for slapping? Not that I use it all that much...

Slapping? Couldn't say. I use them on my bass guitar.

:)

I occasionally use a slap-derived technique... not really slap in the Larry Graham sense. It involves thumping with the thumb and ghosting with the left hand though moderate distortion.

Sounds a bit like a volcano.

I suspect I'm not the first to use it...

im qutie happy with my roundwounds, cuz they work really well. im just scared of wasting that kind of money on strings. yes, i am aware i said 30 bucsk was chicken feet, but i was mearly exagerating, to show the chord is sorta worth it if u think about it. but i'd hate to spend 30 bucks on flat wounds, and have a bad sound...cuz of the person i am, i;d take em off after i broke em in, and if they sounded bad, then they would be gonskies for a long time...

im actually considering getting new strings... i dont ahve the same loev of my tone, which is basically what this is about, and strings are usually the case, but i replaced mine sometime ago....now thait think about it...it's been a long time...roughly 2-4 months i totallly forget.......i play a lot.......im gunan swap thse strings out and tey my completely differnet settings. i got 2 bass heavy on the EQ, i brought it up a little more each time i played, and i noticed, i ahve WAY 2 much bass goin' on..i got a lot less, and im at like +3 outta a +- 10 scale. 0 being the center. the bass is a +7 trebble is a zero, trans(really high stuff) -5.

also, i have 2 settings, one fora tweeter, and one without it, and talking to the guy i got it from, he reminded me the tweeter broke....WHOOPS! i forgot about that. SOOOO after the 12.50 for the tweeter and the 20 bucks for the strings(yes, my chicken feet) ill up date u on the sound.

PEACE!

Unlike roundwound strings, flatwound strings last forever. You can literally play good flats for years with no deterioration in tone or playability. Since they're smooth, they don't collect gunk like roundwounds. Plus, they don't eat your frets, fingerboard or fingers. Seems like pretty good value to me.

intresting....but im talking about if i dont like the tone. plus, how muc hare they?

If you buy some flats and don't like the tone, I'm sure there are several guys here who will gladly trade you a set of roundwound strings. Many of us flatwound devotees have sets of unused rounds sitting around the house.

I agree with Bovine on the so call "chord theory because I've used Monster, and Planet Wave chords and didn't hear any difference than the EB chord($10.00 bucks plus tax)and a chord that I bought at Radio Shack ( which is a Monster copy for $14.99 pus tax with additional 20%0ff with coupon) Now I tried the TI flats when I had the SR5 and it just wasn't my cup of tea(niether was the bass) As far as replacement pickups I also went down this road with this same bass and the tone change was marginal at best even with the change to a Aguliar 0p3 preamp(it did get tighter low mids with the Aguilar but that was about it)which let me know that no matter what I did with this bass,I wasn't going to get the tone that I was after It still sounded the same with the amp that I was using (SWR 500-SM 4X10 Goliath cabinet)I know play thru a Krell power amp, Aguilar 680 preamp with the Aguilar 2x12 cabinet
Which brings me to this-I truly think it has a lot to do with pickup placement on the bass.Because no matter what modification that could be done to these basses, the Sterling, and SR(Sterling)V it's still pretty much going sound the same.
