Hey all,

I was at Wal-Mart the other day so my son could buy a new monitor for his mammoth PC. I saw the new Journey CD. It's only available at Wal-Mart. For $12.00, I got 2 CD's and a concert DVD. CD1 is all new material with their new lead vocalist. CD2 is 11 tracks of classic Journey tunes rerecorded brand new. The DVD is a full concert DVD with their new lead vocalist.

I have been a Journey fan since "Infinity". Neal Schon is a huge influence on my style. I thought, "What the heck", $12.00 seems pretty good. My son got his monitor and I got my CD. I hadn't really listened to any new Journey so I almost didn't know what to expect. I put the CD in and from the opening of the first tune, my son and I were just rockin'!

We listened to the first two songs from the CD with the new material and we were home. Although the new stuff is great, I can't quit listening to the CD2; the one with the classic songs. The new lead vocalist is Filipino. Neal Schon found him on Youtube. He was playing in a cover band in Manila. To look at him, you wouldn't expect the voice he has. Stereotypes are just wrong, but they exist...

He does all Steve Perry's tunes with soul, authority, and a graceful passion that I haven't heard in a while. But - he does have his own voice. He's not a clone. I threw the DVD in this morning and was glued and doing air guitar, air drums, and everything. It was great seeing these guys perform live. They looked like they were genuinely glad to be there.

Schon used a sig LP for most everything. He used a Strat for "Lights". Ross Valory used either a Sting Ray or a Sterling. It don't matter though, it was an EBMM.....

I just thought I'd do a little review here. I hope you enjoyed it a little....

Cheers,

Yeah, I saw that at WalMart too. Seems like a great price. I was a big Journey fan back in the day and Schon was a big influence on me too. The Frontiers tour was my first arena Rock tour (Brian Adams opened for them -yuck) Haven't been that impressed with what they've put out post-Perry. But I'll probably have to check out the new set. It's a great marketing idea: new songs, redo some old songs, dvd.

Thanks for the review.

What's the stereotype?

Haven't checked it out yet but I remember seein the singer on youtube before he got the Journey gig. I was happy when JSS got the gig with Journey but they apparently treated him like crap and were rather underhanded towards his exit from the band.
I've always wanted that guy to get some decent fame going on, hes a real talent. Ive always thought he would have been a better choice for Queen than Paul Rodgers.

What's the stereotype?

When I say stereotype, it's coming from society and the way society depicts people of different backgrounds.

I was just surprised at how great he was and how well he fit in the band.

I also realized that I, myself, should be a little more "global" in my listening. There's probably a lot out there I'm missing...

I was surprised that he was so good as well. Being Filipino-American, I was definitely intrigued by the story of Arnel Pineda joining the band. I totally reserved judgment, though. I thought he could be great, but I thought he could suck rocks.

Not being a huge Journey fan, I wasn't in a rush to run out and see a Journey show, buy a Journey album, etc. Now that I know there's an album and I've seen some YouTube clips of Arnel Pineda with Journey, I'm pretty excited to go buy that album at Wal-Mart. I'm going to do that this afternoon. He sounds great. I like the spin he puts on the old material.

I know the new guy is great, but I will never go see Journey or buy an album of theirs w/o Steve Perry. One of the greatest vocalists of all time and they have pretty much given him the shaft. I geuss I'll go check out a couple tracks though, Neal Schon does play a pretty mean guitar.

Yeah,

I just LOVE Journey!! And, basically being in a Journey trib band (as well as others, lol, lol) I'm excited about their new cd!

Man, I wish I could've found that guy first!! Actually, in the Bay Area here, there are some excellent "Perry" type singers around!!

Too bad Neal didn't play a MM sig, I think BP would have designed a new one just for him.:)

Haven't listened to the new material, have been listening to the recordings of the old Journey songs. Not that into that idea to be honest, I keep comparing it to the originals and although the vocals are fine. End up noticing all the differences...

would have been a lot better had it been a live show recording I think...

As for Steve Augeri. I liked the Arrival album. Just in case anyone hasnt checked it out....

Yeah, Butch, let's hope Neal's stint with the LP is short lived, lol.

Azazael, I really like Augeri too. Journey, is somewhat unique in the sense that BOTH the vocalist and the guitarist have a "unique recognizable" sound that is consistent in that band.

I remember when "Arrival" came out. I was really hoping Augeri would "be the one". I guess not. Seems like if you're i that band and you get sick or have some kind of problem, you get booted.

Yeah, Butch, let's hope Neal's stint with the LP is short lived, lol.

Unfortunately, Neal's been using LP's since he was in Santana. But - he's also used a whole lotta other guitars too. Seems like whatever the flavor of the month is, he'll use it. He was using HSS superstrats in the 80's. He had Jackson making his own line. He was using Tom Anderson for "Trial By Fire". He was using PRS for "Arrival" and now he's got his own sig. LP (which I don't really like...
