Hi!
Could someone tell me what pickups by DiMarzio in a MM Axis Hardtail were installed in 1997. The term "DiMarzio Custom Wound" says nothing.
Are there any current DiMarzio pickups with a similar sound.

Greetings from Germany
(Sorry for my bad English)

welcome. Your English is perfect.

My understanding is that they are the same pickups that are in all Axis's, including Sports and Super Sports, as well as the EVH's. They are custom to these guitars, not available on their own.

Not sure about similar pickups.

They are indeed the same pickups as all the other guitars in the Axis line. I will also tell you that the hardtail Axis is the best Music Man guitar ever!

DiMarzio states that the Tone Zone-Air Norton combo are the closest production model pickups to what is in the Axis/EVH. While the Air Norton is kind of close to the neck pickup in the Axis, the Tone Zone isn't even close to the bridge pickup. The TZ is too hot, mid heavy, and flabby by comparison.

Others will disagree with me but I tried two different TZ's in 3 different guitars over the course of 8 years and got the same result every time.

If I were going to try to match my EVH pickups, I'd look for some medium output PAF pickups with a crisp upper mid emphasis. Those pickups really aren't as hot as people make them out to be. But they handle lots of gain with total ease.

Tim, why are you and I the only ones who have fully come to this state of enlightenment. :D

You're not,

The problem is that my regular Floyd loaded purple Axis is a wedding present from my wife.
It's a truly lovely guitar, it really is. But if I could go back five and a half years knowing what I know now, I'd tell my friend Karl who my wife consulted about 'Robs dream guitar' that what I really wanted was a HARDTAIL Purple Axis.
Back then I didn't even know they came without a Floyd.

And as I'm sure you can appreciate, turning to the lovely wife and saying that her wedding gift to you is only 99% perfect would be a spectacularly bad move.

Don't worry though, I'm not crying. I still have an absolutely stunning guitar.

Hi. I just own a 2d hand 97's Axis Sport, with hardtail. I enjoyed when I've try her unplugged (with a Tele style sounding), but I was really surprise when I plugged her (she's my 5th one). So I decided to check the pickups, to be sure they were the original ones. I've only read "di marzio, made in U.S.A.", but no "custom". Are they the right pu ? I've seen the "cutsom" mention on later ones...
Best regards.
(I'm waiting my 6th one... New old stock ! I'm just crazy 'bout that axe !)
