How do I wire a musicman pickup passivley? Does it have to be just Vol/Tone if it's passive? Are there any other options? Ideally I'd like to use three controls. Can it be wired Vol/Vol/Tone? As in volume of the first coil, volume of the second coil and a master tone? Or maybe Master volume/ Blend / Master tone?

most of the above are possible ......assuming the resistance of the coils is high enough to give you enough gain to run the preamp section of yer amp........

for blend/master volume/tone.....youd need a pan pot.

A schematic for a SUB4 will prob get you in the ball park. SUB4 options are either active or passive with vol treble and bass. I think pot values will be different though.

Of course, if you tinker with the electronics you void the warranty.

Ernie Ball customer service is excellent. Go to their main website.

The pickup only has 2 conductors coming from it. If you want splitting options, you'll have to cut the wires that connect the 2 halves of the pickup. Wiring each coil with a separate volumes will provide minimal changes in tone. You're better off adding a series/parallel/single coil switch for the widest variety of tones IMO. You can use a large switch to fill the third hole.

I should have said that it's actually a Seymour Duncan SMB4A not a musicman pickup. It has four wires.
