Pickups for my Steve Morse Y2D

Hi All, names Ari, and i just joined the forum becuase i was lucky enough to pick up a used steve morse y2d from Musician's Friend (Scratch n Dent) in beautiful De-Purple, with a quilt top (says custom on the backplate). After 3 gigs with it, my conclusion is that it feels (and looks) unreal, but the tones are not my taste. While the sound amazing at home, at a GIG i find i usually prefer Seymour Duncans to Dimarzios(i like that they are less scooped, more upper mids). So, does anyone here have experiece with putting different pickups in the y2d? Looking for High Gain/sparkling clean-thanks!

Ari, congrats and welcome - the y2d is a great guitar!

Have you tried raising the pickup to bring it a little closer to the strings? On the Morse models the factory sets them fairly low (that's how Steve likes them), so raising them can make a noticeable difference.

Hey Pete! I actually tried calling you for advice but you weren't in! No, I didn't raise the pickups yet! I'll give that a try-i hope that will bring some more mids to the forefront! Anybody on the site swap out the pups for a different set?

Steve Morse is ALL about mids. Those pickups have the most mids I have ever heard. What kind of amp do you use? possibly the settings?

Hey Homer-currently gigging a Triaxis right into pa.If it helps, my main axe (so far) is an esp edwards soloist.(alder/maple top). Its got a duncan custom custom and cool rails.at live gigs the axe has a much flatter frequency reponse (which I like).

Yeah, I second that.

I have heard some great aftermarket pickups in the Morse (including an Axis set I tried out for a while), but I found the stock ones to be bang on.

Got back from the gig. WHOA! Raised all 3 pickups, and the guitar totally evened itself out! Sound guys said the tone was angelic! Thanks Pete, and thanks everyone for help! I don't think its gonna drive my high gain amps the same way my les paul does, but the clarity and tone was so beautiful I'll figure out how to boost it a drop!

Agreed. The SM-Y2D bridge and middle pickups have some fairly good sparkle to them when they are raised up closer to the strings.......and virtually the same high output and great upper-mids that '57 Classics have, IMO.
