OT: Chuck, aren't there any laws over there about having pools fenced, as a safety measure with small kids? Here, all pools must be fenced, with a child proof catch on the gate (whether kids live at your house or not)

Yes we have rules and they are strict and enforced. I have a 7 foot high fence all around my pool,self locking gates and it far exceeds local code here and I have the "certificate of occupancy and safety", I'm good.
