Piezo question...

Hi all,

I'm about to buy my first MM - a SR5 - and i'm wondering if it's worth forking out the extra $$$ for the bridge piezo...

As i'm Brisbane, Australia - i have had no luck finding one to play that has a piezo fitted... and the only reviews that i can find are of frettless SR5's - which i'm not intending to buy!

Somebody out there must have one! Please - brag to me about how good it is!!

As to piezo, can't personally help, I'm affraid. But there are a few here with that bridge option.

Hey i am in Brisbane as well, and i am lucky enough to own a stingray 4 with piezo option, and a bongo 4 hh with piezo.

Personally i am a fan of the piezo option, obviously. I find that it gives the bass more versatility, and for softer songs that i find require a more subtle bassy sound i use the piezo. And alot of songs i keep a small blend of piezo in the mix to soften the sound a bit.

I was debating on whether or not to get the piezo for my new bongo, in the end i find it not as useful as it is on the stingray, because of the versatility of the mid choices, and the dual humbucker, but i still like it. And hey your already paying alot of money for an awesome bass, (well down here you pay alot of money), so why not kit it out to boot.

I played a few when I bought my SR4. I couldn't justify the extra cost for the piezo. You get more sounds, but I couldn't really see myself using them.

I loved the piezo on my Bongo so much that I ordered it for my fretless Bongo, too.

I will also be getting the Piezo option on my fretless Bongo. On the fretted Bongo I order 4HH. On the fretless I will be ordering 4HHP. I Think the Piezo will give the fretless a nice acoustic overtone. On fretted, I think it would be a little too noisey. It all depends on your technique and EQ. I also use Nylon filament roundwounds on fretless which are not as noisey as steel/nickel roundwounds - But sound Great

What nylon strings do you use? I have recently had bad luck with Fender nylons---the G string has an odd vibration, and pitch changes slightly during a sustain. This happened on two different basses, with two sets of new strings (7120 & 9120) I am looking for a higher quality nylon to hopefully solve the problem. I've used them for over a year and love their feel and sound. My original set is still going strong and doesn't have the problem noted above.

Hi there Andrew,

I use the 7120 set. I noticed that these string need to really be streched before they stop going out. I will usually tune up, then pull on each string. I can feel them streching as I pull. Then I tune up again and play. I repeat the process until they stop going out.

I believe this is why your older set does not have the problem you mentioned above. Once they are fully streched then they stay in tune and have a great overall tone and the feel is just oooh la la

Great tip. I'll put the set back on and do your stretching trick.

My first set is about 1 1/2 years old, and still sound fantastic. I don't recall the problem with this original set when they were new.

Yeah, my first set didn't seem to need stretching like the second set I put on my ABG. I guess some sets need more than others. Best of luck
