Awesome!

The EX's are basically the EVH model without the EVH sig. That's an unbelievable quilt top:cool: nice score Richard!

Apparently that is a roumor thats been out there for a while. I was told by EBMM Customer Service that it is in fact a "Real" Maple Top , and a "Real" Guitar , that was built during the EVH Transition phase. (Basically an EVH without the sig.)
I think you may have mixed it up with the $200 copy ............

yes, but the EX has only a laminated veneer and not a real top, like the axis or EVH - afaik.
but never the less, nice score!

I have the Japanese catalogue with all the specs and I'm afraid that you are wrong Joe and actually happy for richard that you are wrong :p

The Axis EX are the leftover of the EVH production. My guess and I may be wrong is that Japan distributor made an offer to EBMM to purchase all the remaining bodies and neck and decided to assemble them in Japan.

Richard had many EVH so he will be able to tell the difference if any :)

ok so after checking the 2001 catalogue I can confirmed that the specs between axis and Axis ex are the same except for the body finish

- Axis : hight gloss polyester
- Axis EX : hight gloss polyurethane

donc ask me the difference, I don't know :)

Axis EX were shipped without hard case (only gig bag)

Sorry to butt in on non-Petrucci territory, but there is another difference between the EX and EVH, the EX top is not book-matched.

Also, you guys can do the search if you want to confirm, I think a few EVH's went out of the factory at San Luis without the EVH sig on the headstock in the transition between EVH and Axis.

Ernie is correct. No bookmatch on the Axis EX top. Also, Ernie Ball did make a few EVH's without a signature in the transition. There were very few made, but they do exist.

I read somewhere in some discussion that the EX also generally does not have the same figured necks and fretboard which does seem to be the case with this one, although that could be purely coincidental.

Ok guys my bad

The photos in the catalog do show non bookmatched top and the text is probably a copy paste from Axis description

i own one and i've owned another one in the past.
here are the real facts about the ex series>

they were build from about the time evh left for peavey, but there might be the chance that there were some build before ed left, but only in japan, exclusevly for the japanesse market. production ceased around 2001! so they aren't that rare, but are rare because they were build only for the japanesse market.
all specs are the same as evh except that the top is veneer over real maple top. i checked, it's like that. the majority came with one piece top (veneer), and some (pretty rare) came with bookmatched veneer top. the necks vary in profile. some are the same as evh some a little different. some have great birdseye, some don't, some have plain maple necks. the fretboard seems finished. they build them also in solid colors and only baswood, with no top

it is a great sounding guitar, same as evh/axis!
