This may be old news to some of you, but it was news to me. I caught part of the 2004 Isle of Wight on tv tonight, and was stoked to see Pino Palladino performing with them, playing a Bongo 4HH (Saphire Black with no pickguard ... looked great).
What a spot to fill - Entwistle was a giant, as was his sound, which he absolutely obsessed over. The highlight of the part I saw was when they did "My Generation", complete with Pino's very true rendition of Entwistle's classic solo in the tune, but with Bongo sound. I was just frustrated that other than the solo, the camera hardly fell on him at all. That was typical even when Entwistle was still alive, though, with Townshend & Daltry getting most of the attention. I guess that's why he started wearing leather skeleton suits onstage.
A comment on the performance in general - I was amazed at how good & how huge they still sound. Got to catch a show when/where possible. I found myself wondering how you can still deliver a set of tunes that you've been doing for 30 to 40 years, with such power & feeling. I'm 38, so for me, this means imagining doing some of the same songs for a span of time that's larger than all the days I can recall. Amazing.
Anyway, a great Bongo moment. I tried to find a video clip of this performance & Pino doing his thing, but couldn't.
