I finally got over to my local GC with the intention of comparing the Silo and Silo Special. I’ve been GASing for an LE08 Silo and really wanted to compare the HSH, HSS, and SSS configurations.

Unfortunately, my GC had three Silos and no Silo Specials. I grabbed a red Silo with a maple neck since it was within reach (the rosewood Silo’s were way too high to reach). To my surprise, I wasn’t really bonding with the guitar. I didn’t much care for the FB (I tend to prefer rosewood) and the neck and bridge pickups didn’t sound as good as those on my Axis SS. Also, the neck just felt chunky to me.

When I put the Silo back, I decided to try out a Black Cherry Burst AL SSS hardtail. I’ve never been a big fan of the AL’s looks, but this thing was smoking hot. I picked it up, sat down, and played it for a few minutes without an amp. Man, was I surprised at the feel – it was fantastic. Again, I don’t usually like maple FB’s, but the FB on this AL was so much nicer than the Silo I had just played. It was like night and day for me. The neck itself had a much better feel than the Silo’s. I think I may have like the neck better than my Axis SS (which is saying a lot!).

What really threw me for a loop was the sound once I plugged it in. I was so digging that AL that I didn’t want to put it down. I can see now why there are so many AL fans on this site.

OK…so now I put down the AL and decided to try a JP6. I really didn’t expect to like the JP6 that much but was pleasantly surprised. I liked the flat feel of the neck. The pickups sounded much better than I expected. I played it for several minute and found myself liking it more and more. It didn’t hit me right away like the AL, but it really started to grow on me as I was playing.

Well, I still want to try a Silo HSS and SSS with rosewood FB. I still prefer that overall shape of a Silo or JP6 than the AL….but now I’m starting to think more of an AL than ever before. I’m also thinking of logging some more time on the JP6. I still hold out hope that a Silo Special with RW FB will knock my socks off like the AL. Man, I love EBMM's :)

Everybody is different so no suprise at your findings, I so dig the AL look but have never been able to bond with the playing side as hard as I tried, same with the JP love the look the D-sonic is one of my favorite PUPS but the thin neck made my hands hurt, JP is my favorite shredder, the silo just feels ggod but dont need the extr frets not my thing, now the Silo Special is perfect, want to buy one and mod it, just my thing now:)

Good info

Unfortunately, I doubt that I'll be able to try out an AL any time soon. They aren't very common down here in South Texas.
I had read many different views on the JP6. Based on the neck radius and the fact that I have shorter (or shall I say, fatter, nah, muscular) fingers, I didn't think that I would enjoy a jp6. However, when I tried one out locally, it was soooooooo comfortable to play...........but I only played it seated.
Because of the contour, I'd have to try playing it standing next time, as there is a big difference between seated and standing when it comes to picking angle.
My wife was with me when I tried it out and she noted that it looked very easy to play for me, very smooth.
So guys, go out there and try the guitars for yourself the way the original poster did. Forum accounts are appreciated and valuable, but we will never really know until we try them out for ourselves.....
Maybe Rob will send me an AL to borrow for a few weeks:D.

The AL neck (for me) is the best neck out there - maple or RW they both feel so good.

Once you plug them in - you realise how good those guitars are. - so get one for your collection? ;)
