OK ... so ive had my GK 1001rb sitting in my living room since last monday and FINALLY today i got off my ass, took it to the studio to give it a whirl.
first impression ... its light
I have an SVT Classic, so being able to carry my bass and my head at the same time is new to me. I put it on top of my Aggy 4x10 and thought "hmmm, my rig just got shorter". LoL Honestly, after using an SVT CL for so long this thing felt like toy.
So about how it sounds ... first off, i dont have too much tech knowledge about amps so consider yourself warned.
This amp rules! For the first time (not counting combo amps) Ive been able to set my Sterling and the EQ on the head flat and like what ive heard. This was NOT possible with my SVT CL .... now note: this is my opinion, im not claiming its fact.
I honestly just plugged in, turned teh volume up, ok fine ... way up. and it was great. lows from hell and clean highs from hell too. The presence, contour and boost knobs are great. They add a lot of flavor.
The SVT and I didnt get along. I just couldnt get the tone i wanted from it. But, honestly, thsi GK just had what i wanted right out of the box with no knob turning.
I feel like the SVT rounded things off. I think thats what tubes do right? The GK, to me, is closer to getting the "what my bass sounds like unplugged but loud" tone. To me, this gives more of a chance for the strings and my attack to matter. I can really hear my attack come thru with the GK .... i love that. Also picking at different places also sounded different (like it should). Again, i never erally got to this kinda "place" with my SVT.
the damn thing gets loud as hell too.
I really think this is a great head for punk rock. I dig it! And the price is right too!
I dunno why me and teh SVT didnt get along. I swear i tried and tried to no avail.
anywho... so thats my not-so-technical review of the 1001RB. now i wonder what an HH Ray and HS STerling will sound like thru it. hmm, and with a fresh set of stainless steel super slinksys?!??!!! ROCK
we'll find out next week
