please help me ....!
i' ve bought a sting ray 5 strings and i'm trying to create a sound but i'm still a little bit confused with the controlls.....can you give me some advise on how to use it ...for example to obtain the tipicall "pastorius" style sound wich are the best position of the switch and wich frequencies i 've to encrease ......sorry about me but i'love this bass and i want to learn how to use its multiple controlls ........!

Some sounds are going to be really hard to duplicate because of the types of pickups.....Active and Passive, Jazz and Precision. Do a little homework and see what "Patorius" had his settings like, bass and amplifier (EQ), along with other artists you admire. You can get close but you're not going to be right on. I'm sure you'll get some other replies that are more help than I am. Good choice of bass though!!!

The problem is that I'm pretty sure Jaco never played a fretted Stingray 5. His signature sound came from a fretless Jazz bass...and some really amazing fingers.

You can approximate the sound of a jazz bass but if you really want to SOUND like Jaco there is a Jaco signature fretless...

I agree with fretbuzz, the Jazz Bass growl can't be duplicated with the double coil MM pick-Up. The closest you can get(depending on the type of amp you're using) is by going single coil, roll off trebble by half or less, bass between 3 to 6 o'clock, boost up the mids in the amp and crank the amp's gain loud enough.
If your amp has a graphic or parametric EQ, try crancking up between 100 htz to 200htz; they can give you enough low mid range to give body to the single coil.
Once again, very hard to duplicate the Jaco Jazz sound because He was using a full bridge pick with a tadd of neck PU to give some depth. I found the single coil in the MM a bit weak.

I'd have to agree with Augusto, put the 3way selector in the middle position and then bump up the bass and also try to roll a little of the mids off to get a less-Jaco more J-Bass bridge burble goin' on. But you can get sort of close, the Chicken sounds good like that but with a single p/u bass like a SR5 you have to get more creative with your right hand positioning because there are alot of tones in the bass but you've gotta meet it half way
