The funny thing is that maybe some should play it before passing judgement either way?

Hah! There is a novel idea. Try before you bash. That assumes a certain level of maturity, doesn't it?

I will repeat the question asked earlier in this thread. Could Big Poppa, Dargin, or anyone who knows please explain the difference in tone between the alnico and ceramic pickups?

Thanks!!!!

I'll give it a whirl Chuck.

Alnico is the classic magnet used in old Fenders and the Stingray, it's got a nice warm smooth tone when you set the EQ flat. Since the alnico pickups are wired in parallel, they are a bit brighter and clearer than a series wired pickup. The HH and HS Stingray 4 strings are parallel in all switch positions.

Ceramic magnets are more recent and are very strong so you can mount one on the bottom of the pickup and use steel polepieces to sense the strings. They sound a bit more edgy and crisp but it's not a huge difference. The Sterling HH and HS 4 strings are wired in series for all switch positions so they have more low end and low mids than a parallel wired pickup, but they give up a little clarity.

In practice they both sound great and I have both a Sterling HH and a Stingray HH because I love the tone of both types of pickups.

Thanks for the good description.

I presently have a recent SR5 and will be looking at buying a Sterling 5. I guess this means that I'll have ceramic PU's in both basses. I may find that I will only keep the Sterling since it addresses the only two issues I have with the SR5......the pickguard shape and the beveled edges on the body. Certainly nothing to get your knickers in a knot about but we do have our preferences, don't we?

I appreciate the preview you have given us, Big Pappa.

Funny thought about folks complaining about the bass that is yet to be built: "No good deed goes unpunished".

Great pics, and thanks for the full description BP.

The magnet choices will be cool. I love my (ceramic) 2002 SR5, so a HS Sterling5 may be the ticket. But I've never played an alnico SR5, so we'll have to see~!

Holy Smokes...I got my first MM Sr5 in 1987, in the Tony Levin Peach color, before Tony Levin knew it was his color.

Looks like I might have to give myself a 20th anniversary present. I have a deal with my wife...I get a new bass, she gets some kind of jewelry with a diamond in it....so, you guys can rest as far as putting out new product for a year or my wife is going to start looking like Mr. T.

Just show that bad boy in Medallion Gold at NAMM will Ya?

As far as the negative posts...geez...with the boards..like FDP, Carvin, Ric,TB, the old DoodyPit...I found the information and expertise so helpful, but you had to sift through information from the guys that weren't really players, and the experts in minutia regarding anything from what the cloth covering content was on the pickup wires from basses of the 50s, capcitor colors, and what a real bass should smell like...Really useful stuff for a collector, or a bass porn addict, but I wondered why these guys were ripping basses apart instead of playing them (I know why really)...O well. As far as the negative comments on TB, remember in high school how the girls really hated the cutest cheerleader, cuz she was just, uh, cute? Did I just make the analogy between a brand new bass and a cute cheerleader? I need to go practice. Rock on.
