You can post a photo from your computer for an avatar so why not here?
Why is the only method from the internet via http:// ?

The avatar function in my profile has both methods available. If you're having problems uploading from your computer you probably need to shrink the pic. It has specs in the avatar window, I had to shrink mine way down to get it to work.

Because you're uploading the avatar image to the ernie ball site in either case. If you right click on my avatar and click on properties, you can see the url for the avatar is...

...despite me having uploaded it from photobucket.

When photobucket is down, my avatar still appears here.

Images within posts are linked from other websites, they're not actually on the Ernie Ball website (unless they're attachments). This makes sense... imagine the amount of memory all the photos on this forum would take up.
