My JP6 is a "pre D-sonic", but I've tried the JP with the D-sonic and I like the "pre D-sonic" one better, although the "post D-sonic" one is also an excellent guitar.

I like the D-Sonic better. It seems to be a bit fuller and punchy. My amps are Mesa Boogie Stiletto Ace and Lone Star Special 112 Combos.

I've never a/b'd the two pickups, although I have played both guitars. I did a/b the original pickup in a JP against my Axis and I thought my Axis sounded better. While I like DiMarzio pickups I would have to say nothing I've ever played, it terms of pickups sounds as good to me as Tom Anderson pickups.

That is one of the reasons I'm not really all that concerned which pickup sounds better, even thought I'm about to order my first JP. I love the construction of the guitar. For that matter, I've never played any EBMM that wasn't a dream to play. They are easily the best made guitars I've played. For me the most important quality of any guitar is how if feels and plays. You can always change the sound, but the feel is what it is.

The only reason I like the older style more than the D-sonic is because of how it sounds through my amp - a Soldano SLO-100. Both new and old pickups are great, but the old pickup through my amp gets me closest to the tone I hear in my head.

That may very well change once I get a BFR...

For this reason I have a new JP on order... and an old-style bridge pickup waiting should I need it!

I have the old pickup. I have played the D-Sonic. I like both. I'd like to continue to have both, but I am not going to go out of my way to have both old and new. I have no intention of selling my old-pickup JP6. If I see a great deal on a JP with an old pickup, fine. I might pick it up, but as long as the new guitars come with D-Sonics as OEM, well...I'm fine with that too. I like the way it cuts through, and I'm glad JP made that change. I'm not going to go hunt down used pickups to put in my new guitar. The D-Sonic is just fine with me.

My amp of the present: Mesa F-30
Amp of the future: Egnater Mod-50 (I Hope)

I like the D sonic pickup better, I find it "cuts through" nicer.

I agree. It also seems to cover a more complete range of frequencies than the older pickup. I own an older JP without the D-Sonic and I like it equally as well to be honest... They both have their own sound.

I prefer the Pre D-Sonic. The D-Sonic sounds a little steril to me, playing through a Krank Revolution combo. Sorry.

I have both. My JP6 has the pre-aka-Steve's Special-dsonic and my JP7 has the D-Sonic.

I like them both, actually but I always lean towards the pre-sonic. It just seems a touch warmer to me.

My amp is a Mesa Boogie 2x12 Roadster combo.

:)

The real issue may come up if I order one of those lovely 2007 Blue Dawns......hmmm......I kind of like the option of having both pickups.
