I'm converting a 77 StingRay into unlined fretless.
I've already plugged the original holes and drilled the new ones
but not sure how to locate the 12th fret side dot marks (see picture).

Can anyone post a picture of an original neck with side dots from 9th to 15 th
dot marks?

I had a '79 neck that I'm pretty sure started out life as fretless and at some point was made fretted. I'm guessing, but the sidedots were right on the frets instead of between them. I later had the sidedots moved to a 'fretted' position. Here are some pics I had before the dots were moved, the 12th position dots seem to be close together with the fretline right between them.

I have an ebony lined fretless neck that I believe started out as unlined. I'll double-check, but those dots might be in the 'between the frets' position.

Thank you guys, you're the best :)
So bottom line is two dots set close to each other right on the 12th fret, just like on recent eb models...

I'll post the results soon.

Thanks guys.

Here's a few pics of the result.
I stripped, refinished and aged the neck and of course, the new side dots look great.
Also added my newly created logo (a 100% accurate repro decal).

A source to tap into

Hey Teon,
I have a good friend in the Detroit area who is very knowledgable in the placement of side position markers. His name is Mike Koontz and he can be reached at 248-545-5460. Mike has converted many basses over the years and I always rely on his expertise in anything regarding bass tech. Tell mike Karl with the 79 Ray gave you his number.

By the way, it looks like you've done a fine job so far.

Best regards,

A great piece of work, teon. Don't forget to let us see the finished article.

Another I've noticed about Musicman Nut's one is not P/G holes......

Here's the before and after...
The body was refinished and aged as well, only missing the strap buttons (ordered from EB)
