I'm looking for some advice from those who have used Pro Tools or another similar program. I'm basically old school and not that technically advanced when it comes to computer software. I'm thinking that now is the time for me to become a bit more integrated into the 21st century and take advantage of the newer technology. From what I can tell, there are number of versions/packages of Pro Tools to purchase along with literally dozens of add ons/plug ins. For those who are familiar with this or another similar program, what advice that can you give me (i.e. versions, packages, plug-ins, etc.) as well as your experiences with them (+ or -)?

Thanks.

I use Pro Tools everyday and love it. You need to make sure your computer is up to scratch. A separate computer purposely built is advised. Then you need to ask yourself what will you be recording and how many inputs will you need at a time?

Thanks Colin....I was somewhat thinking that I may need to buy a new lap top solely for that purpose. For right now, I see only recording multiple guitar tracks with maybe sampled sounds for ambience but I would like to have the flexibility down the road to do other things such as full compositions with other instruments etc. Additionally I would like to be able to use it for practising my soloing and such over pre-recorded tracks.

just go for an mbox2 then. It has the same software and you can use an automated desk if you like. If you go to the digidesign website and look for the accelerated videos you will see that exact setup.
