I am changing my pickguard and pup cover on my SR5. I've ordered a new guard and cover from the wonderful customer service folks at EBMM. I understand that the pup covers are glued on and I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to remove the cover without damaging the pup?

Changing from white to black.

Thanks...

Put the p/up into a vice held by the sides where the height adjustment screws are, get a hair drier and warm up the surface by the exposed poles to soften the glue, then from the top use a non sharp tool and place it one either one of the outer magnet poles and with a small rubber mallet gently hammer the poles down until they work loose and gently pry out the pickups.

Not sure but when I swapped p/ups on my SR5 I wanted to retain the white cover but it was stuck-on, I took it apart and then I thought.... "oh buggas" I'll stick with the black one instead.

The pickup cover is not glued on on the StingRay 4. I can't see a reason for that being different on the SR5. Actually I've never seen a glued on pickup cover, except for completely sealed active pickups -- but they don't count.

The thing is somehow wedged in that white cover with something that looks like silicone, and you can't just pull it apart, its either a very tight fit, or it clicks into place, all I know is that to remove the coils you have to push it out from the top through the pole pieces holes.

Pickup Cover Change on Stingray 5s and Sterlings

It can be done with a lot of care, I'd not tap the magnets with Nothing rubber or hammer, Take your time with an exacto knife not to remove any fingers along the glue to plastic cover, but remember on Stingray 5s and sterlingings you'll need to reglue the new cover on in order for it to stay on properly.

Good Luck, but also remember, when you destroy the pickup EB doesn't sell replacement so think twice before you do this.

What type of glue would you recommend?

Thanks to all for the advice.

The best is a Hot Glue Gun, works perfect and dries very quick.

I made the swap last night and didn't find the need to glue the pup cover. It took me a few mintues to figure out when removing the old cover that there are four screws that go thru the pup to to cover holding it on.

Once I scored the silicone gasket around the edge, and loosened the screws, the cover came right off.

I'll post pics of the results later. I am very pleased with the new black guard and pup cover vs. the white pearloid and white cover.

Thanks to all for the advice.

What's funny is that so many people pine for the old white pickup cover on the SR5!

I can understand why and I think they look great on the right combo. Not that it looked bad on mine, but I just really like the way the black goes with the Black Cherry Burst/Maple combo. Now, if my bass was Carbon Blue, the white cover and pearloid guard would have stayed!
