you know, im not certain with the Morse models, because I play a Petrucci and raising or lowering the pickups isn't an option for me, but I've typically found that the sustain, or lack there of, usually has a lot to do with your tone in general...also, if your strings are getting dead. Have you tweaked your tone lately? Or moved your amp/someone accidentally bumped into it? I'm always able to tell when something has been adjusted on my amp (usually its the dog, haha) Sorry I couldn't be of more help!!

naw i was watching an interview with larry dimarzio, he was talking about how the pickups change how the strings vibe and having the pickups to close affects the sustain.

my strings are always very clean so that's not a problem at all.

ill actually E-Mail CS when i can.

A strong magnetic field will dampen movement of the strings. (The converse is why they generate more current from the p'up.) It's a tradeoff.

Jon gave me these measurements for the Y2D:

Single: 9/32 treble, 6/32 on bass
Bridge: 5/32
Neck: 6/32

Mine are about 1/32 closer.

Pickup height can definitely change the sustain in your guitar. Another thing to consider is that your neck may need an adjust because of the cold weather. If you haven't set it up since the cold set in, then you'll need to do that.

I second that. Thanks beej! I've been wondering the same thing (for my original SM. The pickup height had definitely been tinkered with...).
The heights are a little different for the original. They're a little closer to the strings:

Singles (both): 5/32"
Bridge: 4/32"
Neck: 4/32"

Mine are probably a bit lower than that.

(FYI, Steve Morse actually has his p'ups quite a bit lower.)
