Sorry folks. I know this has been talked about. I jsut need a quick check of what I need to do. I know how to get the trem level and I know the truss rod will need adjusting. Which way do I turn it as i look at it from the bridge? And how far roughly? Is there anything else I need to do or consider?

Cheers

Happy New Year to all on my favey forum by the way. May this year bring us all a BFR.

Bear in mind that you may NOT need a truss rod adjustment. My JP6 was fine when I switched it to 9's.. just had to adjust the trem claw to level the bridge.

+1! And for the record, 9's feel great on a JP. I think 10's are too stiff. Hybrids are the best of both worlds though - 10 tops, 9 bottoms. Try 'em out!

SteveB knows of which he speaks... Give it a try first, I didn't need any truss rod adjustment going to 9's on mine either. Now the trem claw was a fun little job. I wanted mine perfectly level so I played with it for a while to get it right.

The trem claw isn't that bad to adjust. Just move each screw in SMALL amounts and then tune up and repeat until bridge is level...

Yeah, not bad, just tedious to get it where you want it...

^ +100

I'm anal too....I want it PERFECTLY level. Took me several hours of trem claw, iteratively retune, trem claw, iteratively retune, trem claw, etc. Mine also needed very little truss rod adjustment after it was all done.

standard w/10s. I have ordered 3 JP6 now from EB. all 3 wer'e perfectly setup and I never touched any of them. My personal obsession with putzing didn't go there. remarkably. I grew used to 10s in no time. Now 9s feel like rubberbands and I shy away.

My advice: don't

By going to a lighter string, you'll have less pull on the neck. Therefore, you'll lose a bit of relief. That means, the neck will pull back more and the result is that the action gets lower. It's the same effect as if you left the same guage on and tightened the truss rod.

Tightening the truss rod (Righty) will "pull" then headstock back (towards you if you were holding the guitar in the playing position).

So, to keep everything the "same" when changing to a lighter guage, you want to loosen the truss so the neck doesn't pull the lighter strings anymore than it did the heavier ones.

You want lefty-loosey.

BTW, one of my Petrucci's has .010s and one has .009s. I find they both have advantages.

Yesterday, I decided to put .010s back on my DG JP6. I had .009s on it before. I had lowered the saddles the day before to get it closer to how my PRB JP6 is set up.

Putting the .010s back on meant I had to re-adjust the trem springs for more pull. I have to adjust the truss because the action is still not as comfy as I'd like but I usually let a day pass between adjustments.

Anyway, the feel is a bit stiffer but after I tuned up, I jammed (can't believe I'm actually saying this) with my 8 year old son. He was playing my self-built Egress. I had him playing 2 bars of E and 2 bars of F while I developed a riff in E Phrygian Dominant. Anywho...

The tone, through my Road King II and Mesa 4x12 traditional was so much tighter than with the .009s. I also think when I had the .009s on, it might have slipped down to Eb so it was extra loose.

Right now I only have .009s on one of my Carvins but I think that will change soon too.

Now if I can just get my DG JP6 to play as well as my other two EBMMs, I'll be a happy camper.

Anyway, what's a post without pics?

My DG Pet and my Egress.
