Quartersawn necks..

So I'm out running around on New Years, and pop into the local GC to see what's new. And there are a few nice new EBMM basses, so I just have to roll up my sleeves and get busy....

Something about a few of them looks.....different....yet familiar. Man , those headstocks look quartersawn! And not just one bass, but two? I've been looking at Stingrays as long as there have been Stingrays, and I've only seen one quartersawn neck on a EBMM, and that was a Silo guitar.

Is this a fluke BP? Or something new? Should I run back tomorrow with the plastic and snap these up?

And FWIW, these were a Ray 5 and 4, and they were killer.....

Some are, some are not. I've had a 2006 SR4 HS that happened to have a quarter sawn neck.

i really don't think it makes that great a difference, it's rare for a stingray neck to warp in the first place.

That's true, and I do not mean to imply that a q-sawn neck is any more or less stable than a standard flat sawn. Because in my experience it isn't. I just haven't seen one on a bass before....

Yes quartersawn is cool. If it's cut right, it's amazing to look at.

The funny thing is, in my experience the only bass necks I had to adjust almost daily, were the high end boutique quartersawn graphite rod reinforced Midwestern assembled bass necks I no longer use...

I have NEVER had to adjust one of your necks on a daily basis BP, and I've adjusted well over 200 of your necks over the years....

That doesn't make sence. Any wooden neck will need seasonal adjustment. Usually for me it's twice a year. Once in the winter and once in the summer. And it's a given when you travel. No matter what bass you own. I took a double truss rod Alembic to Flordia. It needed adjustement the day after I got there. Took my Musicman SR to WI to play some shows and it also needed adjustment after a couple of days in.

EB made it so easy with the truss rod wheel.

Quarter Sawn necks are very cool they do sound different but for every neck made they could have made a few out of the same piece of wood. They almost sound like an ebony fretboard neck, Quartersawn has been around for quite a while but most companies don't do it for obvious reasons.

We sure have been talking about adjusting necks alot (often, daily, rarely, never, always, etc.) lately. Makes me want to adjust somebody's neck with both hands.

Did you know that humans are the only living creatures that strangle? It's not just the opposable thumbs; it's in the will.
