Hello -I am thinking of going to the concert in Toronto. Has anyone seen them? I would like to hear some reviews of the show.

Thanks

No, haven't, but what was Queen thinking - replacing Freddie Mercury, one of the greatest rock vocalists with Paul Rodgers?

That'd be like replacing John Petrucci with one of the guys from Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Two completely different styles of music.

Oh well, I'll just sit back and marvel at the world.

Well Paul is no slouch in the voice department, in fact I would rank him up there with Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey and Fred.

But you are right -I also have a hard time imagining how Freddy's operatic like voice can be replaced with Paul's bluesy rougher voice. I really can't see Paul singing "I Want to Break Free" or "Another One Bite's the Dust".

I can see him doing the harder stuff like "Hammer to Fall" though.

I've heard some of the live stuff on CD, and I thought it was laughable, unfortunately.

Tickets go on sale for the Arena right down the street from me, but at $85/ticket before Ticketmaster fees, I'll pass.

I'm sure Paul, Brian, and Roger are all great friends and that's why they are touring together. But, I just don't see Paul Rogers singing many Queen songs with anything approaching authority. You can't replace Freddie, obviously, but...c'mon--Paul Rogers?

Now, if they had gotten George Michaels for the gig, I'd have had no problem paying that money to see them live. He certainly stole the show at the tribute concert and did justice to Freddie's legacy.

That bad? That is what I was afraid of - before I spend that kind of money on a show I would want to know what it was like. For $50.00 at a small venue I might be more tempted - not over $100.00 (Canadian) at an arena.

What little I heard was, indeed, that bad. In fact, the first song I queued up was "I Want to Break Free." Couldn't make it more than 30 seconds into it. It was frighteningly bad. Someone forgot to tell Paul that a lot of the songs were sung with tongue planted firmly in cheek. He lost the memo.

There is a double cd live set available. I strongly advise checking it out before buying tickets. Don't take my word for it. If you are a Paul Rogers fan, you might dig it. But, sadly, it wasn't for me. Not by a long shot.

I'll just crank up Live at Wembley in DTS if I need my live Queen fix.

EDIT: Here's the Amazon page with samples. "I Want to Break Free" wasn't quite as bad as I remembered, but it's still not $100/ticket good....

I have 2 vids that I downloaded a while back.
I believe they did the "Free" song "All Right Now" and Queen's We Are the Champions. If these clips are any indication of the show, then it's actually quite good.
If someone could tell me where to post them, I'd be more than happy to.
I agree they are totally different musically, but they do a good job blending from what I can tell.

Wow I remember that, yeah he did do a great job. Robbie Williams was very vocal about not being asked, Queen said no thanks. I do believe Queen asked Australian singer John Farnham to join, I'm glad that never happened.

PR smokes...check out his "Muddy Water's Blues" release then check back with me...I'd pay $85 to see him with Queen any day of the week.

No arguments from me, Paul Rodgers has an incredible voice. However I did listen to some of Return of the Champions last night and while his own stuff is great, his voice just does not match up with Queen's music.

Fogman - you might think the show is great because you listened to some of Rodger's work, not Rodgers doing stuff that was originally done by Mercury.

I listened to I Want To Break Free, Crazy Little Thing Called Love and a few others and it doesn't work.

Strangely enough the song I thought he could pull off, "Hammer to Fall", the excerpt was a laid back almost acoustic version. Despite that, the man does have a great voice and that track was very good.

I think the band would be better off writing new material more suited to Paul's voice. Seems like a slam dunk given that May was always the more harder edged song writer than Fred.

Never said PR wasn't a skilled singer. I just don't think he fits with Queen's material. Hell, I like Muddy Water's voice, too--but I don't see him singing "Who Wants to Live Forever." Although, he might do as well a job as Freddie, at the moment, considering....

Agreed. Especially when you're talking about two very distinct and recognizable voices/icons of classic rock.

Imagine DLR fronting Zeppelin...

I've only heard him do the one Queen song. That he did OK!
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he'd be great. I really don't know. Although I am very curious. Paul doesn't have the range that would be required of him for half of the Queen songs.

I still say Gary Cherone would have fit the bill much better! He's got way more vocal range and could morph Freddie quite well. I believe Freddie is one of Gary's heroes to boot!

I like Paul. I like Bad Company, the Firm, etc... not too familiar with Free.
I love the 2 clips I have with him and Queen at Wembley. I've watched them too many times to count.
I just think Freddie's voice had more range than Paul's.
So I question how well he's doing the songs justice. I personally don't expect him to be Freddie. I would actually love to go see them. They're coming to Detroit soon and tickets go on sale in a couple of days. I'm thinking of getting some. :)

They are basically apples and oranges. Awesome singers each in their own right.
