Well I just wanted to ask if the Super Sports were good for Dream Theater/Petrucci type metal? I usually tune down 2 steps so I'm just wondering if it would be fine for a deeper sound like that?

I've got an ASS and have also had a few Pet's, and I just happen to like the feel and sound of the ASS a little better. The pickups on the Axis have (to my ears) a little more bite and midrange than a Pet.

If you're a DT purist, a Pet through a Mesa would make more sense, but an Axis can cover that ground with no problem. In fact, if you get a hardtail ASS, you may find it easier to tune down than with the floating trem on the Pet.

I was thinking about getting the Axis SS with the vintage trem. You think that'd be alright for whta I was going with before?

Do it, do it now, Buy that Axis. once you have one you'll realise that anything else is just a collection of wood & metal whereas an Axis is the first and last guitar you'll ever need:)
