Question about DiMarzio Transition humbuckers

Hi, I have an EBMM Luke III HH with 2 DiMarzio Transition humbuckers, made in 2013. I understand the humbuckers are passive but when I take the battery out I have no sound. Are the DiMarzio Transition humbuckers still active?

The pickups themselves are passive. However, the output of the pickups is fed to an onboard buffer (with boost), which is active. The buffer requires a battery- without it you won't get any sound.
