After looking around on the used market for a while, it seems like there are very few 80's and early 90's EBMM basses for sale yet always a variety of used "newer" ones as well as pre-EB Stingrays turning up. Was this older period a golden era in EBMM bass production where lots of excellent wood was available and now these basses are cherished by there owners? Anybody have any takes on this?

As BP has said, birds eye was quite prevalent back then so those necks that were birds eye figured are sought after. Other than that, the newer basses have the compensated nut which is an improvement. I think the necks are actually better now than in the 80's except for the fine pieces of wood available back then. Other than chance, I do not see why more newer ones are available now.

Maybe someone else has more wisdom to share.

I alwys figured it was because they didn't make as many during that period. Of course, I have no data, and am talking out of my butt.

I have no data regarding your butt or your ability to talk out of it, but I think you're probably on to something there.
